After years of delays and ambitious promises, the second-generation Tesla Roadster was expected to return to the spotlight. First shown in 2017 with extraordinary performance targets, the sports car had spent eight years in development while Tesla focused on higher-volume vehicles and autonomous-driving projects. This archive article records expectations circulating in 2025.

A new Roadster presentation expected in 2025

The report attributed to Tesla chief designer Franz von Holzhausen an expectation that the updated Roadster would be shown before the end of 2025. It anticipated a demonstration prototype, revised styling, new colours and technical refinements, with production discussed for 2027. These were reported plans and expectations, not confirmation that an unveiling or production had taken place.

Why attention turned to 6 November

The article considered the 6 November Tesla shareholder meeting a possible stage for the demonstration, citing Musk’s comments about something special. The connection was speculation, not a confirmed Roadster event announcement.

Ambitious performance targets

The Roadster’s original presentation and later comments produced a striking set of targets:

  • Acceleration of around 1.9 seconds, with later claims of less than a second using a SpaceX package. The original presentation used 0–60 mph; that must not be treated as identical to 0–100 km/h.
  • A top-speed target above 250 mph, approximately 400 km/h.
  • A range target of 620 miles, approximately 1,000 km.
  • A proposed battery capacity of around 200 kWh.

The proposed SpaceX package attracted particular attention. Musk had described cold-gas thrusters intended to supplement the car’s dynamics. The article discussed a possible ten-thruster layout and even limited lifting effects. Those ideas were not a verified production specification or demonstrated road-car capability.

The engineering challenges would be considerable, including structure, suspension, stability control and the practical requirements for any such system. Suggestions about hovering or jumping remained speculative.

Why build a Roadster?

Tesla already had fast electric cars in the Model S and Model X Plaid. The Roadster could instead serve as a halo car: a showcase for design, performance and technical ambition. The article interpreted it as a celebration of driving alongside Tesla’s increasing focus on automation.

With cars such as the Rimac Nevera and Lucid Air Sapphire already demonstrating strong electric performance, Roadster faced a very different market from 2017. Technologies developed for a sports car might eventually benefit other Tesla products, although no particular transfer of motors or battery technology was confirmed.

Driving enthusiasm alongside automation

The report contrasted the Roadster’s emphasis on driving enjoyment with the automation ambitions behind Cybercab and Robotaxi. More accessible models such as Model Y Standard represented another part of Tesla’s range, balancing price, design and technology.

Musk had promised a memorable demonstration, raising hopes that the long wait might soon yield a clearer view of the car. For enthusiasts, Roadster represented a distinctive strand of Tesla’s ambitions. At publication, however, the demonstration date, final capabilities and production schedule still required confirmation.
