A Tesla that runs a small routine when something happens: that is the idea behind Tesla Automations, back in the spotlight after a demonstration on 12 October. Anyone familiar with Apple Shortcuts will recognise the principle: choose a trigger and decide what should happen next.

The interesting detail is that this was more than a proposed interface. Maciej Wilczyński showed the app in English on the car’s display, saying he had made it visible with help from CoilShift without changing its contents. Being present in the software, however, does not mean it has been released to everyone.

How Tesla Automations work

The structure has three parts: a trigger, optional conditions and one or more actions. The trigger starts the routine, conditions determine when it may proceed, and actions are the tasks the car performs.

The screens show examples such as times, outside temperature and seat-belt status among the available triggers. Actions include music, volume and seat climate controls. The interface also allows a delay between steps.

Fewer taps, more personal routines

The main benefit would be in everyday use: grouping tasks that currently take separate steps. Imagine a routine for the morning commute, or another for travelling with passengers. These are possible uses, rather than configurations we can already promise for every car.

For us, that is the most interesting part. An update does not need to transform the whole car to be useful; sometimes saving two or three taps we repeat every day is enough. What matters will be how easy routines are to create and how reliably they run.

What the early demonstrations show

The demonstrations include seat-belt rules, voice commands and spoken announcements when the selected gear changes. Each routine can be arranged as a sequence of elements, without users having to write code.

The early information also points to limits: the centre display must be awake, and routines cannot trigger while Autopilot or FSD is active. These details describe the demonstrated version and would need checking against any final release notes.

When will it arrive in Italy?

At publication, there was no official date for Italy or final list of compatible Tesla vehicles. An English-language interface is a sign of development, but does not confirm Italian localisation or activation on owners’ cars.

A possible holiday-update debut also remained a prediction. We would rather wait for confirmation and explain what owners can actually use, keeping that separate from preview features.

In the meantime, our Software Updates section covers other developments, including our overview of Tesla’s Halloween mode.
