Tesla continues to develop Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD), introducing features intended to advance its driver assistance systems. After refining the system’s “vision”, the company is also working on another sense: hearing. This April 2025 report explores indications of emergency sound recognition in development.
Siren detection on the way
According to findings in software version 2025.8, Tesla had integrated code for a feature capable of detecting emergency vehicle sirens. Although it was not yet active for everyone, its presence suggested it might be enabled soon, perhaps with the 2025 spring update. The proposed feature would further develop the car’s ability to recognise and respond to its surroundings. Using a microphone, it was intended to detect sirens from ambulances, police and fire engines and alert the driver.
How the proposed audible alert works
The system described in the report uses ambient listening, enabled only if the owner has authorised use of the interior microphone. When a nearby siren is detected, stereo volume is automatically lowered and a visual alert appears on the centre display. The alert was expected to resemble familiar safety messages such as “Keep your eyes on the road”, with a blue visual overlay to attract attention.
An interesting aspect was that the alert was intended to work with FSD active and during manual driving, potentially helping drivers who do not use Autopilot. The report also described Tesla’s statement that sound data stays inside the car and is not transmitted or saved unless the user has enabled data sharing.
A potential active safety benefit
The proposed feature illustrated work not only on driving system capabilities but also on the driver’s active safety, including situations where prompt awareness matters. Recognising emergency sounds could help drivers respond more quickly to emergency vehicles and potentially save lives.
At the time of this report, the official rollout was still awaited and was considered potentially close. As always, Teslhub planned to keep readers informed when availability was confirmed.
