For a company known for batteries and charging infrastructure, Tesla’s in-car wireless phone pads can be a frustrating weak point. Some owners describe hot phones, thermal warnings and little charge gained during a journey. That experience is not universal: results depend on the phone, case, alignment and temperature. This opinion piece considers the complaints and the improvements the author wanted to see.
Heat without much useful charging
The author criticised older Qi pads without magnetic alignment. Poor alignment between the charging coils can reduce efficiency and increase heat, while limited airflow can make cooling harder. The original article also alleged problems with charging control and long-term battery stress; those claims require device-specific evidence rather than assuming every Tesla pad damages a phone.
A different approach in China
The Chinese Model Y L was cited as an example of improved charging hardware. The report described:
- active fans around the charging area;
- airflow directed towards the phone;
- charging advertised at up to 50 W. Actual charging speed and temperature depend on compatible devices and conditions; the rating does not guarantee a tenfold improvement or eliminate overheating.
A software wishlist for existing cars
Alongside hardware changes, the author wanted more control over the charging pads. The following items were requests or expectations at publication:
An on/off switch for wireless charging
A toggle would let users place a phone on the pad without charging it. The article included an expectation that this control would arrive in the 2025 winter update. That note records the anticipated release at the time, rather than verifying availability on every vehicle.
Better thermal management
The author proposed reducing power or pausing charging when conditions become too hot. How this could be implemented depends on the charger’s hardware and available temperature information.
Phone charge limits
Another proposal was a user-defined phone charge limit. Unlike setting a vehicle’s battery target, this would require suitable communication and control between the phone and charger; basic Bluetooth pairing does not by itself establish that capability.
Showing the phone’s battery level
Displaying a supported phone’s charge level on the centre screen, with low-battery alerts, was another requested feature. Availability of the necessary data depends on the device and integration.

A hardware wishlist
The author wanted cooled, higher-power charging to reach more markets, alongside:
Qi2 support with magnetic alignment
Magnetic alignment can help position compatible charging coils consistently. Suitable third-party Qi2 products illustrate possible alternatives, although their performance and compatibility vary. Potential benefits include:
- more consistent charging performance;
- less heat caused by poor alignment;
- better retention of a compatible phone while the car moves;
- a more convenient position for supported smaller accessories. Not every accessory supports magnetic alignment or the same charging standard.
The wireless chargers we would like in cars
Phone charging is a small but frequently used part of the cabin experience. The hardware described in China suggested room for improvement, while more useful controls could make existing pads easier to live with. This was a wishlist, not an announcement that every proposed feature was available globally.
