Tesla introduced updates to Model 3 Long Range and Model Y Long Range in China, with reported improvements in performance and range. At publication, these changes concerned Giga Shanghai vehicles for the Asia-Pacific market. A European introduction remained a possibility, rather than a confirmed announcement.
What changed on the two models?
Model 3 Long Range
Model 3 Long Range’s quoted 0–100 km/h time fell from 4.4 to 3.8 seconds, bringing it closer to the Performance version. Range rose by 5.6%, from 713 to 753 km on China’s CLTC cycle.
The reported price increase was around RMB 10,000, or approximately €1,300 at the time, alongside those performance and range improvements.
For comparison, the European version cited in the report offered 629 km on the WLTP cycle. Applying the same 5.6% increase would give more than 660 km WLTP, but that was an illustration, not an announced European specification. CLTC and WLTP figures are not directly interchangeable.
Model Y Long Range
Model Y Long Range’s reported change concerned range alone, rising from 719 to 750 km CLTC, or 4.3%. The article cited 533 km WLTP for the European Long Range version; a similar percentage increase would bring that to about 555 km WLTP, again as a hypothetical comparison rather than a confirmed rating.
Performance: was the boost included?
The 0.6-second acceleration improvement matched the effect associated with Acceleration Boost, the paid upgrade also available in Europe. The new Chinese version appeared to include that benefit as standard. The article interpreted this as a possible strategy to offer more value in the base price amid intense competition in China.
Could the changes reach Europe?
Although the changes were initially limited to the Asian market, Tesla has often extended improvements across regions, particularly when they do not depend on local components.
If the range increase came from new cells supplied by CATL or another Chinese manufacturer, however, trade rules and sourcing choices could affect a European rollout. The report did not establish the cause or confirm European availability.
The possibilities discussed were:
- A range improvement might reach Europe if it came from aerodynamic changes or software optimisation.
- Acceleration Boost might remain a paid option, as it was in Europe at publication.
An anticipated improvement
The China updates illustrated Tesla’s ongoing development of its existing models, even between major refreshes. They might also offer a hint of future European changes, but official confirmation was still needed. For readers outside China, the key distinction was between specifications already announced for that market and changes that remained speculative elsewhere.
