Tesla’s Sentry Mode lets a parked car monitor its surroundings and record potential security events. That additional monitoring also uses energy, which can reduce the charge available when the vehicle is parked for longer periods. The software 2024.38.4 changes discussed in this archived article aimed to make Sentry Mode more efficient, rather than eliminate its energy consumption.
What is Tesla Sentry Mode?
Sentry Mode uses the vehicle’s cameras and, depending on the configuration, other systems to monitor activity while parked. Depending on the event detected, the car can flash its lights, display a warning or sound its alarm. With the required recording setup, event footage is saved to a USB drive, and the owner can receive an app notification for qualifying events. Sentry recordings do not include audio; the presence of a speaker on some vehicles does not mean the clips record sound.
Using Sentry Mode thoughtfully
These habits can help balance parking surveillance against energy use:
- Enable it selectively: Consider using Sentry Mode where monitoring is useful, such as a less familiar parking location, rather than leaving it on for every extended stop.
- Use location exclusions: Supported settings let you exclude places such as Home or Work, so monitoring can remain available elsewhere without running at a location you have chosen to exclude.
- Watch the battery level: The configuration described in the original article disabled Sentry Mode below 20% charge. Check the behaviour and warnings for your specific vehicle and leave enough energy for your next journey.
Keep a separate copy of important recordings. Storage is finite, and recording behaviour or automatic deletion depends on the folder, vehicle software and available USB space. Do not rely on footage remaining on the drive indefinitely after an incident.
Energy consumption while parked
Sentry Mode keeps vehicle systems awake to process camera information. The original article cited roughly one kilometre of indicated range per hour and a broad 7–14% daily estimate, depending on the model and battery. These are approximate observations, not interchangeable measurements or guaranteed consumption figures. Conditions and software matter, and prolonged monitoring can use a meaningful amount of energy. The low-battery shut-off described above is another reason to check the vehicle’s remaining charge before an extended stay.
What software 2024.38.4 was reported to improve
The archived report described an energy reduction of up to 40% through more efficient processing of video by the onboard computers. It concerned an initial rollout for Cybertruck, with other models expected to follow in later software releases. That reported improvement should not be read as a guarantee that every Tesla received the same change in version 2024.38.4, or that every parking session would use exactly 40% less energy.
Parking surveillance with a smaller energy cost
Reducing Sentry Mode’s energy demand can make it more practical to use without taking as much from the battery. Its value still depends on the circumstances: it is a monitoring feature, not a guarantee against damage or theft. Choosing sensible settings and understanding its effect on the battery helps owners decide when to use it, while future software and hardware changes may further alter its efficiency.
