Tesla had been discussing a Robotaxi for several years. In April 2024, a newly announced reveal date brought the project back into focus. This article records what was known and what remained speculation at that point; its dates and expectations should not be read as today’s schedule.

The announced reveal

Musk announced on X that Tesla would unveil its Robotaxi on 8 August 2024. That was the date announced at the time, not confirmation that the event ultimately took place then. The previous major new-vehicle unveiling discussed here was Cybertruck in November 2019.

It was the same presentation remembered for the window breaking during a demonstration of its strength.

The next-generation Roadster and Tesla Semi had previously been shown together in 2017. Those relatively infrequent reveals helped explain the interest in another new vehicle programme.

The announcement suggested a reveal was only months away, although Tesla could still change its plans. An unveiling and the launch of a commercial autonomous service were separate milestones.

Robotaxi and the proposed lower-cost Tesla

Another discussion arose when Musk responded to an X post by industry commentator Sawyer Merritt.

Merritt suggested that Tesla’s proposed roughly $25,000 vehicle and Robotaxi would share a platform, with Robotaxi essentially being the version without a steering wheel. The original Italian article’s €25,000 wording was not an announced European price.

Musk responded with an eyes emoji. That attracted attention, but an emoji was not a detailed product confirmation.

A shared architecture for smaller vehicles was plausible. It was still an inference to describe Robotaxi as a steering-wheel-free “Model 2”, a name Tesla had not formally confirmed for a production model.

The exchange led to speculation that a lower-cost conventional car could appear alongside Robotaxi. It did not establish a second vehicle reveal.

Production timing

The article recalled earlier 2022 expectations for a Robotaxi reveal in 2023 and volume production in 2024. Those earlier expectations had already slipped by the time of this April 2024 report.

It then considered a late 2024 reveal plausible and connected Robotaxi timing with the next-generation vehicle programme, for which late 2025 was being discussed. Those were period forecasts, not production dates established by a vehicle on sale.

The most demanding part of the programme was unsupervised driving. Despite progress in Full Self-Driving software, the customer system discussed here was Level 2 assistance and required an attentive driver to supervise continuously.

A vehicle designed to operate without a driver therefore required a substantial step beyond that customer system. Rapid software changes over the next 18–24 months were possible, but did not guarantee that the required capability or approval would arrive on that timetable.

Possible Robotaxi layouts

If driverless vehicles became practical, their interiors could be arranged differently. Face-to-face seating and larger sliding doors were among the possibilities considered for easier access and passenger use.

The article imagined several variants, including one suited to resting on a journey and another with screens and equipment for work. These were proposed use cases, not specifications Tesla had announced for available models.

Other imagined layouts focused on watching films, relaxing or talking with friends in a limousine-like space. The potential variety illustrated how removing the driving task might change cabin design.

Projected service costs

Musk described a purpose-built Robotaxi as optimised for autonomy and a low cost per mile or kilometre, rather than for a person driving it.

He also discussed other innovations and emphasised the goal of minimising the overall cost of travel. This paraphrases the point made in the original quotation; it is not a published price or a guaranteed operating result.

—Elon Musk’s stated development objective, as discussed in the original report.

The attraction was affordable access to transport for people unable or unwilling to buy a relatively expensive car. Musk projected costs below a bus fare. Achieving that would depend on the complete service economics, not simply building a vehicle without a steering wheel. It could affect car ownership if realised, but was not an available offer.

What the announcement meant in April 2024

Robotaxi represented Tesla’s ambition to turn driving automation into a distinct transport product. It offered a possible route to more flexible mobility, while leaving major technical and regulatory questions unanswered.

The planned 8 August announcement was therefore an event to watch, rather than evidence that a driverless service was imminent everywhere.
