Flush door handles are a recognisable part of Tesla’s minimalist styling. In October 2025, proposed safety requirements in China raised questions about how such designs might change in one of the company’s major markets.
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) had published a draft standard for exterior and interior door handles, aiming to make emergency access and escape more straightforward. At the time of this article, it was a consultation proposal, not a rule already in force.
The proposed handle requirements
The draft called for exterior mechanical release on each relevant passenger door, excluding the tailgate. It included requirements for opening doors on the non-impact side without tools after specified incidents, including a traction-battery thermal event. The emphasis was on mechanical access rather than relying solely on an electronic release.
Inside, the draft sought a visible, identifiable mechanical release on the door or within 300 mm of its edge, with other placement and marking requirements. The aim was to make releases easier for occupants and rescuers to find, rather than confronting a different hidden arrangement in each vehicle.
Why Tesla’s designs were under scrutiny
Tesla used several different handle arrangements across its range, with electrically operated releases forming part of the normal opening process:
- Model S had powered retracting exterior handles.
- Model X used an integrated exterior switch arrangement.
- Model 3 and Model Y used pivoting flush handles that operated an electrical door release.
Interior mechanical emergency releases already existed, but their location and accessibility varied by model and production year. The original article noted that some older rear-door arrangements lacked an easily accessible release cable, while newer designs could place it behind trim or a cover. Owners should consult the instructions for their own vehicle rather than assume that one description covers every Tesla.
The report also questioned exterior access after a loss of low-voltage power. It should not be read as a universal claim that every Tesla door is impossible to open without electronics, because model-specific emergency procedures differ. Laminated glass, useful for noise insulation, can also make window-breaking methods more difficult; it is not interchangeable with tempered side glass.

Tesla’s reported response
The original article cited design chief Franz von Holzhausen discussing work on a revised release arrangement. The idea was to bring electronic and mechanical operation together in a more intuitive control, potentially using a deeper pull or press to reach a mechanical release. It was a reported design direction, rather than a confirmed production specification and rollout date.
If such an approach entered production, it could significantly alter how Tesla’s handles worked. A common design across the range, or the disappearance of Model S’s distinctive handles, remained speculation in the article rather than an announced decision.
A likely direction for change
The proposed Chinese requirements addressed concerns familiar from wider discussions of flush and electronic handles: frozen mechanisms in cold weather, dependence on electrical systems and difficulty finding emergency releases. The original article also referred to reports from several countries of occupants being unable to exit after power loss. Those reports were context for the debate, not a finding that every design or incident had the same cause.
Tesla could respond with a China-specific solution or a broader redesign, but the October 2025 article did not establish which route it would choose. The central design challenge was to combine clear emergency operation, everyday practicality and the styling that made its vehicles recognisable.
