Owners of recent Teslas may have seen a “Camera visibility limited” warning even when the outside of the windscreen looks clean. In some cases, the obstruction is on the inside: on the glass in front of the forward-facing cameras.
A thin, cloudy film can build up on the inner glass in front of the cameras. The article links this to residues released by cabin materials, known as off-gassing, or to changes in temperature and humidity. Reaching that area is more involved than wiping the windscreen: the mirror and camera housing may need to be removed.
The following post from a Tesla owner shows a camera-glass cleaning attempt. We do not recommend attempting the job without a thorough understanding of the correct procedure.
It can be a delicate job. The original report described owners breaking fragile plastic clips while attempting it themselves, then needing Tesla to repair the damage. It is understandable that the issue attracted considerable discussion among owners and enthusiasts.
Musk: front-camera cleaning is an area of focus
At the time of the report, Elon Musk had publicly addressed the issue, acknowledging it and saying Tesla was working on it. His description of it as a “major area of focus” indicated that the company considered it important, although it did not establish the precise solution or a release date.
The article suggested that any design changes might initially be limited to new vehicles. Its central point was that reducing the need for this awkward cleaning task had become a priority; compatibility with existing cars was still uncertain.
Possible solutions
The report discussed two broad possibilities:
- A redesigned housing
A camera enclosure with stronger, more accessible clips, or a tool-free arrangement using magnets or quick-release fittings, could make access easier. The article imagined a much quicker cleaning process, rather than reporting an announced design. - Preventing the film from forming
Improved sealing or ventilation might help prevent the cloudy layer from developing. At the time, it was unclear whether such a change could be fitted to vehicles already on the road.
A small issue with a noticeable effect
Tesla’s driver-assistance systems rely on their cameras, so reduced visibility can trigger warnings and restrict Autopilot or FSD features. A seemingly minor obstruction can therefore have a practical effect on everyday use.
The encouraging point was that Tesla had acknowledged the issue. The article anticipated improvements in future vehicles, but no confirmed solution, rollout date or retrofit was established in the report.
