A preview of possible Model S and Model X changes

In this report dated 1 March 2024, Tesla was expected to unveil a significant update to its flagship Model S and Model X. Despite their luxury positioning, the cars had fallen behind the rest of Tesla’s range in some newer features. Sources described as reliable had told us that ambient lighting and a front camera would be added and announced by Tesla that day. An official announcement was still awaited.

The front camera

A front camera would represent an important update for Model S and Model X, bringing them alongside Cybertruck in this area of technology. The feature is designed to reduce the blind spot immediately ahead of the vehicle, helping in tight parking spaces and complex urban settings by giving drivers access to a forward view and improving awareness around the car.

Enhancing the cabin: ambient lighting

Tesla’s ambient lighting, previously introduced in the 2024 Model 3, Cybertruck and Model Y in China, was also expected to reach Model S and Model X. Thin light strips near the upper edge of the doors, curving around the dashboard and extending towards the rear seats, create an almost 360-degree effect and a high-tech cabin atmosphere.

The new yoke is only the beginning

Tesla had recently introduced an updated steering wheel for Model S and Model X with the much-requested centre horn, improved stitching for durability and an overall improvement in build quality.

The redesign addressed earlier criticism of the steering wheel, particularly the awkward position and sensitivity of the horn button. The new design placed the horn more intuitively in the centre beneath the “TESLA” badge, with stronger stitching addressing both function and longevity.

Tesla’s approach of introducing updates as needed rather than following conventional model-year cycles aims to keep its cars current in technology and design. Continuous improvement allows new features and refinements to be integrated quickly, responding to customer feedback and changing regulations. It is an approach that helps retain the range’s freshness and appeal while reflecting the company’s focus on innovation, safety and customer satisfaction. By prioritising changes as they become ready over traditional cycles, Tesla seeks to raise expectations for electric vehicles. At the time of this report, we were still waiting for official announcements.
