Tesla often introduces hardware changes without announcing them in advance, leaving owners and analysts to identify them. In the finding covered by this article, community researcher Green spotted a reference in the firmware to a camera sensor called IMX00N. The designation did not appear in a public catalogue and prompted speculation about a future generation of FSD cameras, possibly linked to a platform described in the report as AI4.5. That connection was a hypothesis, rather than a confirmed Tesla announcement.

The existing sensor: Sony IMX963

The report began by examining the cameras used with Tesla’s AI4 hardware. It identified their sensor as the Sony IMX963, understood to be a customised version of the automotive Sony IMX490, and listed the following specifications:

  • 5.4 megapixels (2896 × 1876)
  • 3.0 μm pixels, suited to low-light imaging
  • 120 dB HDR

The article linked those capabilities to detecting lane markings in difficult conditions and handling bright headlights alongside dark areas.

IMX00N: a possible custom sensor for Tesla

The IMX00N designation did not appear in Sony’s public databases. The author interpreted the “00” naming as a possible indication of a purpose-built sensor, potentially developed by Sony to Tesla’s specifications. Neither that interpretation nor the specifications had been confirmed. The report explored three possible areas for improvement.

Global shutter
One possibility discussed was a global-shutter sensor, perhaps related to Sony’s Pregius family. Unlike a rolling shutter, a global shutter captures the image simultaneously across all pixels, avoiding the geometric motion distortion associated with scanning an image line by line. The article suggested this could help a vision system working with rapidly changing scenes, but it was not an established IMX00N specification.

Resolution and range
A move towards 8 megapixels, or roughly 4K, could provide more image detail for future FSD systems and AI5 neural networks. Again, this was a possible direction discussed by the author, not a confirmed resolution.

Sensitivity and colour optimised for AI
The report also considered whether a custom sensor might use a pattern such as RCCC (red-clear-clear-clear) instead of a conventional RGGB Bayer filter. That would trade some colour fidelity for greater light sensitivity, particularly at night. No such filter arrangement had been confirmed for IMX00N.

What about retrofits?

For owners, the obvious question was whether a retrofit might be offered. The position for HW3 remained uncertain: the article referred to a promised “FSD v14-lite” for 2026, without establishing whether hardware changes would be involved. It considered an AI4 camera retrofit unlikely in the short term, because software is trained for the characteristics of the existing sensors. A different camera arrangement could require compatible hardware and new training; the report did not establish a retrofit plan.

When might the cameras arrive?

There was no confirmed timetable. The article suggested that IMX00N might:

  • already be entering production without an announcement;
  • arrive with a revision of HW4;
  • debut on a future vehicle such as Cybercab;
  • or accompany AI5, which the article did not expect before 2027. These were alternative possibilities, not a confirmed rollout.
