Tesla reported an important milestone in its 4680 battery programme: its lowest cell manufacturing cost per kWh to date. After investment, testing and production improvements, the generation referred to as Cybercell was presented as a step towards more economical electric-vehicle production. A lower manufacturing cost did not itself announce a reduction in retail vehicle prices.
The development of the structural battery pack
Early 4680 applications included a Model Y with a structural battery pack. That initial version was not retained in the range for long, and fast-charging performance was one of the issues discussed. Tesla’s first Texas-built Model Y deliveries with in-house 4680 cells began in April 2022, as recorded in its first-quarter filing that year.
The article also cited charging power of up to 500 kW in discussing the newer cells. Such a figure relates to a vehicle, battery pack, charger and operating conditions together; it should not be read as a universal charging capability guaranteed by the cell format.
Tesla’s reported lowest cell cost per kWh
Michael Guilfoy, Tesla’s Director of Cell Manufacturing Operations, shared the milestone on LinkedIn. The announcement described Cybercell as Tesla’s lowest-cost cell per kWh. The focus was therefore on cell manufacturing economics, an important step towards making electric vehicles more affordable, rather than proof that every complete battery pack was cheaper than every alternative.
At the time, the article identified Cybertruck as the model using these 4680 cells. It suggested that the cost and structural advantages might support wider use in future models, but that was an outlook rather than confirmation that 4680 would become the standard across Tesla’s range.
Lighter vehicles and structural integration
The structural-pack approach can integrate the battery more closely into the vehicle’s body, supporting stiffness, packaging and weight distribution. The article linked that integration to the possibility of lighter vehicles and improved crash performance. Actual safety and weight outcomes still depend on the design of the complete vehicle.
Does this mean the end of other cell formats?
The progress naturally raised the question of whether 4680 would replace established cell formats. The use of 4680 cells in one platform did not establish that Tesla would replace the different battery architectures used across its other vehicles. Its broader point was that high performance, cost and structural integration must be considered together: the Cyberbeast illustrated the performance potential of a 4680-based pack, without establishing that one cell format was best for every vehicle.
