On 24 January 2023, Tesla announced a new investment of more than $3.6 billion in Nevada. The project centred on two facilities: a 4680-cell factory and a plant dedicated to high-volume production of the electric Semi truck.

Two factories with different objectives

Tesla proposed annual cell capacity of 100 GWh and the addition of 3,000 jobs. These were targets for the announced investment, not production or employment levels already achieved on that date.

The distinction between designed capacity and actual output is essential. A facility can be sized for a particular volume of batteries, but real production depends on installing, commissioning and ramping its lines. A figure in GWh describes energy contained in cells, not a number of trucks already ready for delivery.

Nevada beyond the Gigafactory’s first phase

The expansion built on a site where Tesla said it had already invested $6.2 billion since 2014. The new programme added a commitment to next-generation cells and heavy transport alongside the existing industrial base.

The announcement’s significance lay in linking the product with its factory. For an electric truck, demonstrating a route is only part of the task: it also needs to be built consistently, supplied with batteries and supported by fleet servicing and charging.
