At the 2024 Cyber Roundup, Musk discussed Tesla’s next-generation driving computer, known as HW5 or AI5. This article recorded expectations of an introduction between late 2025 and the first half of 2026, alongside claims of up to ten times AI4’s computing performance. These were forward-looking targets, not measured production results or a guaranteed rollout.
The article compared the planned computer with HW4, which brought revised cameras and computing hardware. It argued that early software had not used HW4’s full potential while Tesla continued supporting HW3. Its detailed account of the first HW4 model and introduction dates requires checking; the claim that every benefit amounted only to a small image-quality improvement was the author’s assessment, not an independent benchmark.

AI5 was expected to bring a larger change. The article discussed an approximately 18-month development horizon, a tenfold improvement over HW4 and further software gains for HW4 relative to HW3. Such ratios depend on the workload, implementation and comparison method. They described ambitions for future systems rather than capabilities already delivered to customer cars.

Higher peak power demand was also discussed: 700–800 watts for AI5, compared with the article’s 200–300-watt estimates for HW3 and HW4. The expectation was that varying the active computing workload could reduce typical consumption below the peak. The report’s projected 2026 introduction remained a development target, with actual efficiency and availability still to be established.
