Winter can be demanding for an electric car’s efficiency. Heating the cabin and clearing the windscreen both use energy that could otherwise contribute to range. A Tesla patent explored a different approach to windscreen heating: dividing the glass into independently controlled zones so that heat can be applied where it is needed.

The limitations of conventional systems

Heating a broad area of the windscreen uniformly can be less targeted than necessary. The article identified several potential drawbacks:

  • higher energy use, particularly relevant to an EV;
  • limited precision, heating areas that may not need it;
  • possible interference with antennas and sensors;
  • reduced optical quality in sensitive areas, such as those in front of cameras.

How zoned heating would work

The patent, titled Automotive Glazing Heating System with Independent Zone Activation, described independently heated sections of the windscreen. Rather than one heating element covering the whole surface, the concept used:

  • a segmented conductive surface;
  • separate zones divided by small unheated gaps;
  • independent power control for each zone.

The intended result was to heat only the part of the glass that needed it, reducing unnecessary energy use.

Responding to changing conditions

An electronic controller would activate individual zones using inputs such as:

  • real-time weather conditions;
  • vehicle speed;
  • sensor data;
  • manual driver commands.

Dedicated areas for cameras and wipers

The special-purpose heating zones were among the most interesting aspects of the design.

Keeping camera views clear

One zone would be aligned with the front cameras’ field of view. If snow, ice or condensation obstructed that area, the system could heat it selectively to help restore camera visibility. That could support camera-based functions, including driver assistance; it would not itself make a vehicle autonomous or remove supervision requirements.

Helping prevent frozen wipers

Another zone would cover the lower windscreen where the wipers rest. There, the design aimed at:

  • preventing the wiper blades from freezing;
  • keeping the wipers ready for use.

Tesla already used related heating solutions, but the patent proposed bringing targeted heating into a more complete, modular design.

The broader aim: energy efficiency

The concept fitted Tesla’s wider efforts to reduce energy consumption and integrate components more closely. Alongside ideas such as printed circuits in glass, the objective was to use energy more precisely. That could also matter for future robotaxi operations, where running costs and efficiency affect the economics of a service.

Looking ahead

The patent illustrated an approach based on improving individual components systematically. Zoned windscreen heating was an example of a less visible innovation with potential benefits including:

  • preserving more driving range;
  • supporting safety-related visibility;
  • helping maintain performance in difficult weather.
