TAD in Norway will have to wait for the European decision. That is the position expressed by Transport Minister Kamzy Gunaratnam in her reply to a parliamentary question on 16 October. The document does not announce national approval of Tesla’s system.
For anyone following driver assistance in Europe, the distinction matters: political discussion, technical assessment and activation in cars are separate steps. In this case, we have an official position on the process to follow.

TAD in Norway: what the government says
The reply acknowledges that the system appears to handle ordinary traffic situations well. However, questions remain about ensuring that the driver stays attentive and ready to take back control, as well as concerns about compliance with speed limits.
The minister therefore considers it preferable to wait for the EU decision. If European approval is granted, Norway will consider it in line with its obligations under the European Economic Area. This is neither an approval already granted nor a start date.
TAD in Norway: driver assistance and autonomy are different
Tesla Assisted Driving remains a system requiring supervision. It is important to keep that clear when discussing wider availability: a feature’s name or an impressive video does not transfer driving responsibility from the driver to the car.
Tesla’s Italian support material also distinguishes currently enabled features from full autonomy. Drivers must stay alert and ready to intervene; features also depend on the vehicle and applicable approvals. For operating instructions, refer to the manual for your own car.
The electronics can ease some tasks, but they do not remove the need to understand the system’s limits. We also seek to emphasise this distinction in our autonomous and assisted driving section.
TAD in Norway: why official communications matter
European discussions often generate rapid-fire headlines. We prefer to separate three questions: what has been said, which authority has made a decision, and what an owner can actually use in their country. Confusing those answers makes news more eye-catching, but less useful.
- An announcement does not automatically constitute approval.
- An approval does not, by itself, describe a rollout timetable.
- A feature’s presence in another market does not establish its availability in your own car.
This approach also helps when reading about software updates: before expecting a feature, it helps to know the market, model, hardware and version concerned. When one of those details has not been disclosed, we leave it open.
What changes for Italy
This news concerns Norway’s position: it does not announce TAD activation in Italy. The reply to the Parliament in Oslo is not an Italian measure and does not provide a launch date for our market.
For Teslhub readers, the value of this news is a clearer understanding of the European process, without turning each step into a countdown. We will continue to follow developments, checking communications from the authorities and Tesla as they emerge.
