Satellite internet in the palm of your hand
SpaceX reached an important milestone with Federal Communications Commission approval for its Starlink direct-to-phone service in partnership with T-Mobile. This archive report describes the position following the late-2024 US authorisation, after the project’s initial announcement in 2022.
Bringing satellite connectivity to mobile phones
Starlink uses a large constellation of low-Earth-orbit satellites to provide broadband connectivity. Its established internet service and the direct-to-phone project are distinct: the latter is intended to extend mobile coverage where terrestrial networks are unavailable.
Connecting ordinary phones directly to satellites had long been an ambition for Musk. Announced in summer 2022, the T-Mobile partnership aimed to provide satellite connectivity on compatible mobile devices. An initial 2023 launch expectation slipped as the project progressed through regulatory requirements. The FCC’s late-2024 approval allowed it to move into its next phase.
Other companies, including Lynk, were also developing direct-to-phone systems. SpaceX’s partnership with T-Mobile offered access to an existing mobile network and its customers, with satellites acting as supplementary mobile towers in space for compatible devices. Approval did not mean every phone, service or country was covered.

Engineering challenges and progress
Linking mobile phones with satellites moving at thousands of kilometres per hour, hundreds of kilometres above Earth, presented substantial engineering challenges. SpaceX had demonstrated a video call earlier in 2024. Emergency authorisations during hurricanes Helene and Milton also allowed connectivity to support affected communities.
The FCC described potential public-safety benefits, particularly improved access to emergency communications in areas without a terrestrial mobile network. That potential depended on the services and operating conditions actually authorised.
Regulatory framework and operating conditions
The approval came with conditions. The service was intended to supplement an existing terrestrial provider, T-Mobile in this case, rather than operate as a wholly independent mobile network. SpaceX also had to meet interference-protection requirements for terrestrial services.
The report discussed SpaceX’s plans for lower satellite orbits to address latency and signal strength. It cited existing orbits of around 530 kilometres and proposed operations at 340–360 kilometres, below the International Space Station. Operations at those altitudes would require coordination with NASA. These orbital details require review against the applicable authorisation before being treated as a general deployment permission.

What could come next?
Direct-to-phone connectivity could reduce coverage gaps, with emergency access an especially valuable use. At the time of this report, pricing, launch dates and the range of available services remained open questions. The SpaceX–T-Mobile partnership illustrated a possible shift in mobile connectivity, but did not promise uninterrupted service everywhere. The article also considered whether similar technology might eventually reach Tesla vehicles; that was speculation, not an announced Tesla feature.
