Reports of human support for the Robotaxi
The original article discussed reports that Tesla’s planned Cybercab service could combine automated driving with human support from a remote operations team. It attributed comments about a possible VR-based remote-control approach to investor-relations executive Travis Axelrod. Those remarks were attributed to Axelrod in the reports discussed at publication; they were not independently verified against a public Tesla technical specification. They described a proposed system, rather than a confirmed production design. Remote assistance and remote driving are different functions, and the report did not establish exactly which actions an operator would be able to perform.
Was the proposed $25,000 Tesla actually the Robotaxi?
For years, discussion of a more affordable Tesla had centred on an expected $25,000 car, often informally called Model 2 or Model Q. The article contrasted those expectations with Musk’s emphasis on autonomy and the two-door Cybercab concept. It referred to his comments on the limited value of a conventional low-cost car in an autonomous future, while also noting continued rumours about smaller Tesla models. The names and product assumptions in that discussion were not confirmed announcements of a separate customer vehicle.
Why remote support could matter
The article identified two possible reasons for human involvement in an automated service:
- Handling difficult situations: a human support team could help resolve unusual events, although its role and technical limits would determine what assistance was possible.
- Developing the system: human feedback could provide useful information for improving software. That does not, by itself, prove faster training or better safety outcomes.
Other automated-driving operators had also used remote-support teams, but their systems and operating rules differed. It would be misleading to assume that assistance from a control centre always meant a human remotely steering the vehicle. The article also drew a parallel with remote-operation demonstrations involving Optimus; such demonstrations did not establish the Cybercab’s final operating model.

Technical and regulatory challenges
The proposed service still faced several important questions:
- Technology: customer FSD remained supervised driver assistance. Its operation should not be confused with a separately authorised automated transport service.
- Regulation: the approval process would depend on the actual system, operating area and role of any remote personnel.
- Public confidence: the service would need evidence of safe operation and clear communication of its limitations.
At the time of this report, Musk was targeting Cybercab production in 2026, alongside earlier plans for services using Model 3 and Model Y in Texas and California. Those were forward-looking plans, not confirmation that the services or vehicles were already generally available. Successful deployment could affect transport costs and urban mobility, but those outcomes depended on execution.
What remained unresolved
The early discussion highlighted how human support might fit into Tesla’s autonomy plans. It left substantial questions about the difference between remote advice, supervision and direct vehicle control. The significance of any hybrid approach would depend on the system actually deployed, the applicable approvals and operational evidence, rather than the concept alone.
