Chinese vehicle-safety proposals were prompting questions about touchscreen-led cabins in April 2026. The original report discussed requirements that could bring physical controls back to important functions, affecting a design approach associated with Tesla and adopted by many other manufacturers.

The article also interpreted proposed steering-impact tests as a potential obstacle for open-top yoke wheels. It discussed 2027 as an expected implementation period if adopted. Those were draft-stage reports, not confirmation that every requirement or a blanket yoke ban was already legally in force.

Physical controls for essential functions

The reported MIIT proposals addressed access to important driving controls. The functions listed in the article were:

  • Gear selection.
  • Direction indicators.
  • Hazard-warning lights.
  • The emergency-call function, described in the original article as eCall.

Access, dimensions and feedback

The report cited a minimum control area of 10 mm by 10 mm and clear tactile or audible feedback. The intended distinction was between readily accessible essential controls and functions hidden in touchscreen menus. The precise scope, permitted control designs and final wording require the applicable official text; the dimension alone does not prove that every capacitive control would be prohibited.

Why yoke steering wheels were discussed

The article referred to draft standard GB 11557-202X on driver protection in a steering-system impact and described tests at ten points around a wheel. It inferred that an open-top yoke, such as that offered on Model S and Model X, could not satisfy tests involving the missing upper rim. That interpretation needs the actual test procedure, treatment of alternative shapes and final standard. It is not enough to establish a legal ban merely from the appearance of the wheel. Claims about impact absorption or airbag behaviour likewise require engineering evidence.

Possible effects beyond China

China’s size gives manufacturers a reason to consider shared designs, but it does not make global changes inevitable. Separate market specifications remain possible even where economies of scale favour common parts.

For Tesla, the return of indicator stalks on some vehicles showed that physical controls could coexist with a minimal cabin. The article also considered whether existing backup PRNDL buttons might meet future gear-selection requirements, but did not establish compliance. That would depend on the final rules and the controls’ actual accessibility and operation.

The planned end of Model S and Model X production also affected the future of the original yoke design independently of these proposals. Cybertruck’s closed, rounded-square wheel was structurally different, but a continuous rim alone did not prove it would pass the proposed tests or establish Chinese market approval.

The report connected these issues with China’s separate work on mechanical door releases. The status, effective dates and vehicle categories of those requirements needed to be considered separately from the cabin-control proposals.

Balancing screens and physical controls

At publication, the important question was how manufacturers would respond if the draft requirements were adopted. More physical access to essential functions could alter cabin design without eliminating touchscreens. The final balance would depend on the completed standards, implementation periods and each manufacturer’s engineering decisions.
