Italy’s 2024 charging-point incentives covered separate schemes for households and apartment buildings, and for businesses and professionals. This article records the programmes discussed in July 2024. Their spending periods, application windows and conditions differed; it is not a statement that those historical schemes remain open today.

Domestic charging-point grant

The domestic scheme supported the purchase and installation of EV charging infrastructure by eligible individuals and condominium buildings. The original article listed the following allocations for different spending periods:

  • €40 million for eligible work from 4 October to 31 December 2022.
  • €40 million for the 2023 allocation described in the report.
  • €20 million for eligible 2024 expenditure.

The grant covered 80% of eligible purchase and installation expenditure, capped at €1,500 for an individual applicant and €8,000 for condominium common areas. The 2024 application window opened through Invitalia on 8 July, using the required digital identity and documentation. Authentication methods included SPID, CIE or CNS, with a certified email address (PEC) among the administrative requirements described. Eligibility still depended on the rules for the relevant edition.

Charging grants for businesses and professionals

The separate business and professional scheme supported eligible charging installations. The original report described an €87.5 million allocation split into:

  • €70 million for business installations costing less than €375,000.
  • €8.75 million for business installations costing €375,000 or more.
  • €8.75 million for self-employed professionals with a VAT registration.

The second application window began on 15 March 2024 and closed on 20 June 2024, before this July article’s publication. Its headline contribution rate was 40% of eligible costs, with the treatment and caps for design, grid connection and other items governed by the scheme rules. It should not have been presented as an application still available in July merely because it had opened in March.

Applications and eligible spending

Applications followed Invitalia’s procedures, which could differ by applicant category and investment size. The eligible categories discussed included:

  • Purchase and installation of charging infrastructure.
  • Necessary electrical installation and building work.
  • Supported monitoring equipment, design, works supervision, safety and testing costs, within the applicable rules and limits.
  • Eligible grid-connection costs.

The article listed taxes, non-technical consultancy, purchases of land or buildings and building-permit costs among exclusions. The exact treatment of any expense needed checking against the relevant scheme rather than assuming every cost associated with a charger qualified.

The potential benefit

For an eligible applicant within an open window, a grant could reduce installation expenditure and make private charging easier to adopt. Home or workplace charging could also offer useful convenience and energy-cost advantages, depending on tariffs, installation cost and usage. It was not automatically cheaper than every public charger, and an installation grant did not itself subsidise every later electricity bill. These were historical opportunities with defined conditions, not an unconditional promise of savings.
