Although Model X was Tesla’s largest passenger SUV, its sleek shape left some buyers wanting more load space. Elon Musk’s brief comments fuelled speculation about a larger SUV, nicknamed “CyberSUV” by enthusiasts. At the other end of the range, rumours also pointed to a compact crossover: smaller than Model Y, but with more useful cargo space than Model 3.

Why some owners wanted a larger SUV

Model X combines distinctive falcon-wing doors with six- or seven-seat configurations. Its rounded shape, however, can limit luggage space compared with boxier rivals such as Rivian R1S or Kia EV9. For families carrying children, friends and sports equipment, load capacity can be a deciding factor. The seven-seat Model Y offered a smaller, less expensive alternative, but did not solve every space constraint. The report also discussed changes to the availability of that configuration in North America and China.

Musk’s cryptic reply

Asked on social media to build larger vehicles, Musk replied simply: “OK”. That was not a product announcement, but it fitted earlier hints about additional Tesla projects. At the June shareholder meeting, he had referred to “other things” beyond the Robovan, later shown at the We, Robot event. With Robovan still a longer-term project dependent on regulatory progress, a larger family SUV appeared to be another possible direction. The Cybertruck platform was suggested as a potential basis for a full-size, seven-seat “CyberSUV” with generous interior space.

The compact crossover possibility

Alongside a larger SUV, Tesla might also target compact crossovers. The article cited Reuters reporting about plans to start production of a next-generation mass-market vehicle in June 2025. It discussed a possible price of around €30,000 or $25,000, a longstanding ambition that had proved difficult to achieve within production-cost constraints. Rumours envisaged futuristic, Cybertruck-inspired styling, useful interior room within a smaller footprint and a price below Model 3. These were reports and possibilities at publication, not confirmed specifications or a launch commitment.
