Tesla’s market valuation passed $1 trillion for the first time in more than two years, as described in this post-election report. The rally followed reports that President-elect Donald Trump’s team wanted to prioritise a federal framework for autonomous vehicles—a potential benefit for Tesla’s longer-term plans.
A potentially favourable political shift
Tesla shares rose by more than 5% following a Bloomberg report that Trump’s team considered autonomous-vehicle rules a priority for the US Department of Transportation. The article cited a share price of $315.56 and a gain of more than 19% over a week. It connected the rally to Musk’s strong support for Trump during the election campaign and Trump’s announcement that Musk would help lead the proposed Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. Investors were anticipating a potentially more favourable regulatory climate, rather than a completed change to the rules.

The autonomous-driving promise
A federal autonomous-vehicle framework could be significant for Tesla’s ambitions. Despite years of ambitious announcements, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system remained supervised, requiring an attentive human driver. Musk’s vision extended beyond that system: at the time, he said unsupervised technology could launch as early as the following year in states such as Texas and California, initially using Model 3 and Model Y. That was a forecast, not confirmation of an available driverless capability for owners.
Challenges and competition
Tesla faced substantial competition. Alphabet’s Waymo was already operating autonomous vehicles on public roads, while Tesla’s driver-assistance systems continued to face regulatory scrutiny, particularly over safety. The article reported analyst expectations that a Trump administration might introduce more permissive rules. CFRA Research analyst Garrett Nelson described Tesla and Musk as among the election’s biggest potential beneficiaries. Whether Tesla could deliver on its ambitious plans remained an open question.
