Tesla unveiled Cybercab at its “We, Robot” event on 10 October 2024—11 October in Italy—alongside the larger Robovan. At Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California, Elon Musk arrived in a two-seat vehicle with upward-opening butterfly doors. The presentation offered a tangible look at Tesla’s intended autonomous-transport products, rather than marking the start of a generally available driverless service.

The Cybercab reveal
Cybercab was designed without a steering wheel or pedals, with unsupervised operation as its intended use. Tesla also demonstrated an inductive charging concept that would avoid plugging in a cable. Musk discussed a price below $30,000 and a production target before 2027; these were forward-looking targets. The original article’s suggested €30,000–35,000 European price was an estimate, not an announced European list price. Tesla’s camera-led driving approach was central to the proposal, but it should not be described as abandoning production-vehicle LiDAR that Tesla had routinely used. The vision included customers summoning a car for short journeys or longer use. The key features and ambitions presented were:
- Two seats.
- No steering wheel or pedals in the presented design.
- Butterfly doors.
- Intended unsupervised driving, distinct from the supervised FSD available to customers at the time.
- Inductive charging as the intended charging method.
- A demonstration of robotic cleaning, presented as part of the planned service operation.
- A large rear luggage compartment.
- Ambitious low operating-cost and fare projections, including comparisons with bus travel; these were not a published service tariff.
- A proposed purchase price below $30,000, rather than a vehicle that anyone could order at the event.

The unexpected Robovan
Tesla also revealed Robovan, a larger vehicle intended to carry up to 20 people or cargo. Its design aimed at group travel and different commercial uses. Like Cybercab, the reveal described a future product concept and its intended functions, not a certified service ready for worldwide deployment:
- Capacity presented as up to 20 people.
- A design intended to operate without a conventional driver’s controls.
- Large sliding doors for access.
- Unsupervised operation as an objective, rather than proof that customer FSD had become driverless.
- Wireless charging discussed as part of the design.
- Low projected transport costs, dependent on development and operation at scale.
- Possible adaptations for different services, with the original report also imagining uses such as mobile catering.

Optimus, Tesla’s humanoid robot
Musk also discussed Optimus and its potential future uses. The original article gave a $28,000–30,000 price range for a second-generation robot, but the event did not establish a retail product at that price with a firm delivery date. His comments about its enormous potential were a statement of ambition. The presence of robots interacting with guests did not by itself prove that every interaction was performed autonomously; their capabilities and safety still needed careful assessment.

A vision with work still to do
The presentation attracted a large online audience, with the original report citing more than 3 million viewers on X. Tesla’s ability to generate interest was clear, but audience size did not validate the technology. Cybercab made the company’s autonomous-transport ambitions more visible after years of software development. Turning that vision into a large-scale service still required reliable operation, a credible safety case, manufacturing and compliance with local rules. The potential effects on mobility were substantial; the reveal itself did not settle the timing or outcome.
