LFP batteries are valued for their durability, but their performance can be affected by sub-zero temperatures. Tesla’s established approach is preconditioning: the car uses energy to warm the battery before reaching a Supercharger. The feature described in this archive report added another way to manage a cold pack during charging.
Heating an LFP battery while Supercharging
The article linked the feature to Tesla’s 2024 Holiday Update and described support for rear-wheel-drive Model 3 and Model Y vehicles with LFP batteries. It also referred to Standard Range and limited-production Long Range variants; the exact pack and vehicle compatibility needs to be distinguished from the trim name alone.
The report described a technique in which an alternating current component heats the LFP battery while connected to a V3 or V4 Supercharger. Although the charger supplies DC power, the controlled current changes create heat through the cells’ electrical resistance. The battery is effectively heated internally using power from the charging station. The article claimed this could make charging a very cold LFP pack up to four times faster; that is the report’s stated improvement, rather than a guaranteed result for every vehicle or charging session.

Why it matters
The intended benefits were particularly relevant to drivers in colder regions:
- Faster charging in cold conditions: bringing a cold pack towards a more suitable temperature can reduce the time spent waiting at a Supercharger.
- More convenient unplanned charging: preconditioning remains the preferred way to prepare for a fast-charging stop, while the additional heating method was intended to help when advance warming had not been possible.
- Better cold-weather usability: the aim was to reduce the effect of low temperatures on an LFP charging session, rather than eliminate every cold-weather limitation.
The article highlighted Tesla’s integrated approach to vehicles and charging infrastructure. Control over both sides of the system can make coordinated functions such as internal battery heating easier to develop and deploy.
Making electric driving more practical in the cold
For drivers facing very low temperatures, improved battery heating can make charging stops more practical. The original article presented the feature as another example of Tesla refining everyday electric-car use alongside higher-profile advances such as Cybertruck charging speeds. Actual charging performance still depends on the vehicle, battery temperature and conditions at the stop.
