Tesla and xAI appeared to be exploring a whole cast of AI personalities for in-car conversations. A teardown of software version 2025.20 uncovered hidden references to different Grok roles, suggesting a more customisable assistant experience. The code findings were an indication of work in progress, rather than confirmation that every role was already available.
What is Grok?
Developed by xAI, Grok was expected to become a significant addition to Tesla’s software experience. The findings suggested it could offer around a dozen conversational personalities, with different tones and themes rather than a single standard assistant voice.
The personality labels found in the firmware included:
- Argumentative – a debate-oriented style.
- Assistant – a conventional helper.
- Conspiracy – a role the article interpreted as potentially tongue-in-cheek.
- Doctor – a health-themed role label.
- Kids’ Stories & Trivia Games – children’s stories and quiz-style entertainment.
- Meditation – a calmer conversational theme.
- Motivation – encouragement and motivational conversation.
- Romantic / Sexy – a more intimate conversational style.
- Storyteller – personalised stories.
- Therapist – a counselling-themed conversational role.
- Language Tutor – language practice.
- Grok Classic – Unhinged Mode – Grok’s less conventional conversational style.
The 2025.20 firmware also contained icons associated with the roles, which suggested a release could be approaching. The article expected any initial rollout to be limited to selected cars and users, potentially employees and testers, rather than reaching every owner at once.

Initial hardware requirements pointed to AMD, rather than Intel
At publication, the early Grok implementation appeared intended for AMD-equipped vehicles. Older Intel-based Teslas could therefore be left out initially. The article noted that an earlier Chinese voice assistant had later expanded to Intel cars and wondered whether Grok might follow a similar path, but no such extension was confirmed.
It was also unclear whether Grok would be included with Premium Connectivity or require a separate plan.
Energy-saving guidance in the same software branch
Separately, software 2025.20.3 added an Energy app feature intended to help drivers reduce consumption on familiar journeys. Using fleet data, it could show the estimated percentage of energy saved by driving a little more slowly.
The article gave this example: a route usually driven at 106 km/h could suggest reducing speed to 98 km/h to save 1% of battery energy. The benefit would depend on the journey and conditions, but could be useful when remaining charge was limited.
The article also considered how similar fleet-based information might help future Robotaxi route planning or unsupervised-driving development, potentially alongside road-condition data. Those were possible future applications.
A more personalised assistant
The findings in 2025.20 pointed towards more personalised in-car AI conversations. Rather than only a conventional voice assistant, Grok might let users choose a character or conversational style to suit the moment.
At publication, Italian availability and final vehicle compatibility still needed confirmation. The code gave an interesting preview, but not a complete rollout schedule.
