Software 2025.14.12 brought reports of Child Left Alone Detection to compatible newer Tesla vehicles. The initial rollout discussed in this article concerned Model 3 cars built from 2024 onwards, with other compatible configurations expected later. This archived account describes that introduction, rather than promising the same feature set on every car today. Children must never be left unattended in a vehicle.
How does child detection work?
The feature uses cabin radar fitted to compatible vehicles. Earlier software, including the 2025.2.6 rollout discussed in the article, had begun making use of that hardware for occupant detection. Child detection added another use for monitoring the cabin, including rear-seat occupancy.
Cabin radar can detect subtle movement associated with an occupant. The original report described sensing body size, breathing and heartbeat; those descriptions should not be read as a medical measurement or a guarantee that every child will be detected. The initial alerts included exterior lights, an audible warning through suitable vehicle hardware and a notification in the owner’s Tesla app.
Alerts could recur while the situation remained unresolved. The report also stated that radar processing took place locally in the car rather than sending the radar data to Tesla’s servers. The owner still remained responsible for checking the cabin and responding to any warning.

Activation and settings
The feature was described as enabled by default, with controls under Controls > Safety > Child Left Alone Detection. Its settings and reactivation behaviour depend on the software version. Current supported guidance describes disabling alerts for a drive cycle rather than assuming a permanent off switch, so owners should follow their vehicle’s instructions.
Further capabilities discussed at launch
The original article discussed possible later responses such as activating climate control or contacting emergency services if the driver did not respond. Those possibilities were distinct from the initial alerts being reported.
At that stage, automatic emergency calling was not established as part of the described release or as a universal feature. Hardware and regional emergency-call arrangements differ. Later manuals may describe additional climate responses, but they should not be projected backwards into every vehicle’s 2025 software.
Compatible vehicles and rollout
The initial availability discussed was for compatible 2024-and-newer Model 3 vehicles. Newer Model Y and Cybertruck configurations with suitable cabin radar were considered possible later recipients. Compatibility for post-2021 Model S and Model X remained uncertain in that report because their radar configuration differed.
Owners should use the information for their specific vehicle to establish whether cabin radar and the feature are available. A generic model-year statement, or a menu seen on another car, is not sufficient confirmation of compatibility.
Europe and Italy
The 2025 release was reported as rolling out in Europe, including Italy. That did not mean every eligible car received it at the same time. Vehicle hardware, regional support and the installed software determine availability; the supported European manual identifies the EEA as the relevant operating region for the feature it describes.
Possible future child-seat integration
The article also discussed smart child seats communicating with the vehicle as a possible future development. That was not a feature buyers could assume was included in the release being described.
Using cabin radar for additional warnings represented another attempt to reduce the risk of an occupant being overlooked. It remained an additional safeguard with limitations, not a replacement for a responsible adult checking the car.
The practical point is to understand the warnings and the equipment actually installed, while never relying on an automated system as permission to leave a child alone.
