This early preview explored how integrating Grok 3, the AI model developed by xAI, might change the Tesla experience. A conversational voice assistant promised more natural interactions than existing voice commands. What could that mean for owners?
What is Grok?
The name “Grok” comes from Robert Heinlein’s science-fiction novel Stranger in a Strange Land, where it describes a deep, intuitive understanding. xAI’s ambition is to build AI that can understand questions and respond in a more sophisticated way.
One of the capabilities highlighted in the preview was access to real-time information, including recent news. That can make responses more up to date than relying on training data alone; it does not mean every answer is necessarily current or correct.
What might Grok do in a Tesla?
The preview envisaged more than a replacement for existing voice commands. Potential features included:
- Contextual searches: for example, asking Grok for a good café near a Supercharger, with suggestions based on location and reviews.
- More natural commands: asking “How far can I still drive?” rather than having to use a specific phrase for remaining range.
- Closer integration with Tesla connectivity: potentially using Premium Connectivity to provide traffic, weather and services along a route.
- Conversational spoken answers: responding in a natural voice, reducing the need to look at the display.
Which models might support it?
Early reports suggested that vehicles with MCU 2 and MCU 3 could support Grok, with processing handled on servers rather than entirely in the car. That raised the possibility of broad availability without major hardware changes, but the preview did not establish final compatibility.
How much might Grok cost?
Pricing remained an open question. The report cited X Premium+ at $40 a month for Grok 3 access and a possible standalone service at around $30 a month in the US, speculating about a similar euro price in Italy. For Tesla, it expected basic commands to stay free while advanced conversations might come with Premium Connectivity or a new “Tesla Premium+ Connectivity” package. These were the expectations described at publication, not confirmed Tesla plans or current prices.
When might it arrive?
The official indication described in the report was simply “soon”. Elon Musk had repeatedly said Grok would be integrated into Tesla vehicles, without a precise date. With xAI working on voice capabilities, the article speculated about a spring 2025 software release; that timing was a forecast.
Looking ahead
Grok’s potential arrival represented a significant development in how people interact with their car. If the proposed capabilities were delivered, an advanced conversational assistant could make the interface feel more intuitive and personal. Compatibility, features and pricing still needed confirmation at the time.
