This report described Tesla beginning to equip its vehicles with a new 5G modem, a step forward in connectivity. It concerned the new Model 3, Cybertruck and Model Y, which had previously used LTE (4G) modules.
5G performance
The new modem promised significantly higher connection speeds than the earlier LTE technology, described in the report as ranging from 20 to 100 Mbps. With suitable coverage, the 5G modem could reportedly reach up to 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps), improving streaming, navigation and potential future services requiring more bandwidth. These figures were potential speeds rather than guaranteed performance in every location.
Could existing cars be upgraded?
For owners of a Tesla with an LTE modem, the obvious question was whether a 5G retrofit would be possible. At publication, Tesla’s parts catalogue did not list a price for the new module, suggesting that a replacement was not yet publicly available. The update would also involve more than swapping hardware: Tesla Service would need to program the module and integrate a SIM associated with the vehicle identification number. Tesla had previously offered a 4G upgrade for vehicles with 3G modems when those networks were retired, leaving open the possibility of a similar option for 5G. This was not confirmation of a 5G retrofit programme.
More advanced connectivity
Although 5G coverage remained limited in many areas, particularly rural and suburban locations, the reported update reflected Tesla’s continued development of in-car connectivity. Wider coverage and further details would determine how much of that potential drivers could use.
