Tesla’s panoramic glass roofs are a distinctive part of its cabin design. A US patent discussed in this report explored an unusual next step: perforated insulated roof glass that could help distribute climate-controlled air and reduce noise.

Titled “Automotive Perforated Insulated Glass Structure”, the patent described a potential roof structure combining glazing, air distribution and acoustic treatment. It was a proposed design, rather than an announced production feature.

A more functional glass roof

The concept involved a more complex structure than a conventional panoramic panel, made up of:

  • a conventional outer glass layer;
  • an inner perforated layer with thousands of small holes;
  • an air chamber between the two panels.

The gap between the panels would measure between 0.5 and 6 millimetres, with holes in the inner layer ranging from 0.05 to 2 millimetres in diameter. That space would be central to how the system worked.

Climate control integrated into the roof

The HVAC integration was one of the most interesting elements. The patent described warm or cool air entering the chamber between the two glass layers, then reaching the cabin through the small perforations.

In effect, the roof would become a broad air-distribution surface. The proposed benefits included:

  • more even cooling throughout the cabin;
  • less noise than conventional vents;
  • potentially better energy efficiency.

Using small perforations to manage noise

The concept was not limited to ventilation. The perforated structure was also intended to provide acoustic treatment. Wind and tyre noise are particularly noticeable in an EV without a combustion engine masking them, making cabin noise an important area for improvement.

The honeycomb structure

The design also described hexagonal internal cells, similar to a honeycomb. These would help stiffen the glazing, distribute airflow and absorb or damp sound waves. The intended result was a roof combining structural strength, quieter operation and improved thermal performance.

Will it reach future Tesla vehicles?

As with many patents, there was no guarantee that the design would reach production soon—or at all. It nevertheless showed an avenue Tesla was exploring for cleaner-looking, quieter and more efficient cabins. After reducing visible switches and air vents, another possibility was giving the panoramic roof a more active role in cabin comfort.

Thermal and acoustic comfort are important in modern EVs. If the concept proved practical, its contribution could be more significant than the small perforations might initially suggest.
