Tesla, Sunrun and Renew Home announced an agreement on 24 June 2026 to make over 16 GW of flexible capacity available to utilities and large customers in the United States. The resources to be coordinated were already distributed across homes: batteries, solar installations and devices capable of shifting consumption.

Sunrun and Tesla: the role of home batteries

The project planned to aggregate home batteries managed by Tesla and Sunrun with flexible loads coordinated by Renew Home. In the announcement, the companies referred to hundreds of thousands of storage systems and over eight million thermostats and smart devices.

The approach combined two capabilities: supplying electricity from batteries when needed and moving some household consumption away from the most critical hours. The companies also identified large data-centre operators among the intended customers.

Over 16 GW does not mean a new power station already running

The figure expressed the flexible capacity the agreement aimed to coordinate. It did not announce construction of a single 16 GW power station or demonstrate that the entire resource was already simultaneously available in every area.

It is also a measure of power, rather than stored energy: GW should not be confused with GWh. Understanding how long a system can support a particular load requires additional information beyond its power rating.

The role of homes in the grid

The agreement showed how household installations could become part of planning for large electricity requirements. Making this coordination work requires local programmes, device availability and customer participation: owning a home battery is not enough on its own.

The opportunities and targets described concerned the US market. The announcement did not automatically open the same programme to Italian Powerwall owners.
