Tesla’s next major FSD update, expected the following month when this article was published, was being presented as a significant release. Elon Musk said FSD v14 would substantially reduce driver-attention alerts. That was a statement about the planned software and monitoring behaviour, rather than permission for drivers to stop supervising.
With v13.2.9, released in May, Tesla had introduced a short tolerance period before an attention warning. Camera-based monitoring had remained strict since v12.4. Musk described the planned behaviour as more natural and almost human, although those descriptions were his assessment rather than an independent safety finding.
Supervision remains necessary
Despite the proposed reduction in alerts, the customer system would remain supervised. Drivers must continue paying attention and be ready to intervene at any time, including at difficult junctions, in bad weather and during unusual events. Musk’s explanation referred to users briefly switching FSD off to avoid an attention strike while performing other actions. That explanation should not be read as advice to check messages while driving or as evidence that attention is only needed in difficult situations.

What was expected from FSD v14
Musk said the new version drew on the software used by Austin’s Robotaxi vehicles, which he described as roughly six months ahead of the customer build then available in the United States. The promised improvements concerned capability, safety and more natural behaviour around other road users. These were expectations for the forthcoming release, not results independently established by this article.
Musk also said unsupervised FSD might arrive in some cities later that year, with v14 providing part of the technical foundation. That was a forecast for a separate deployment context; it did not make customer FSD unsupervised or announce general availability.
And what about Europe?
At publication, European availability still depended on regulatory approval. The proposed changes to the US customer software did not establish a European launch date, and drivers in Italy could not assume that the same features or monitoring behaviour would become available locally.
Teslhub will continue following official FSD updates and Elon Musk’s statements, with analysis of what the changes could mean for everyday driving. Developments in the European regulatory framework remain particularly relevant to readers here. Future analysis and tests should be distinguished from work already completed.
Stay with us for further updates as the software and European approval process develop.
