Following its announcement that FSD would move away from one-off purchases, Tesla removed standard Autosteer from new vehicle configurations in the United States and Canada. Under the change described in this report, new orders included Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, while active lane-centring assistance, known as Autosteer, became a paid feature. It was a significant shift for a function that had long been part of the Tesla ownership experience.

What Basic Autopilot previously included

Before this change, most Teslas—apart from certain trims, including some Standard versions—came with Basic Autopilot. It combined two main functions:

  • Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, to manage speed and distance from the vehicle ahead;
  • Autosteer, to help keep the car centred in its lane.

Together, these functions formed a driver-assistance system used daily by many owners. The report concerned Autosteer being removed from standard equipment on new US and Canadian orders. It suggested other markets might follow, but did not establish that the same change had been announced everywhere.

Lane-centring assistance becomes a paid option

The author contrasted the decision with lane-centring features offered on mainstream cars such as the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. For the new Tesla configurations described, an FSD subscription would be required to obtain the steering-assistance functions. Tesla had announced that one-off FSD purchases would end on 14 February 2026 in the markets covered, leaving subscriptions as the option after that date. These remain driver-assistance functions requiring supervision.

A stronger push towards FSD

The removal of Basic Autopilot appeared to the author to be a deliberate strategy to encourage FSD adoption. At publication, Tesla’s US and Canadian configurators prominently displayed the $99-per-month FSD subscription. Buyers could still choose a one-off purchase during the remaining period before the announced change; the article describes that historical purchase window.

The article also linked the strategy to a target in Elon Musk’s compensation plan involving 10 million active FSD subscriptions or purchases. Removing standard steering assistance could increase the pool of potential subscribers, although that was the author’s interpretation of the commercial motivation.

What this meant for Autopilot

The decision reflected a broader move towards recurring software services rather than including every function in the car’s standard equipment. Some buyers might see that as part of a transition towards more capable systems, while others might view it as a reduction in value.
For new orders in the markets covered by the report, the familiar Basic Autopilot package had changed, altering the relationship between the vehicle, its software and the ongoing cost of features.
