A discovery in Tesla’s website code pointed to interior updates for the 2026 Model 3, bringing the saloon closer to Model Y. Backend configurator assets and the Electronic Parts Catalogue suggested black Alcantara headlining and pillar trim, together with a new 16-inch QHD centre display. These were clues found ahead of an official configurator announcement.

Headlining and pillar trim

The cabin roof trim was one of the changes owners had requested. The existing Model 3 used light-grey fabric, a minimalist choice that did not suit everyone seeking a darker, sportier interior. The code included IN3PB, historically associated with Premium Black interiors. In the new 2026 assets, however, it mapped to dark Alcantara headlining, in line with a recent Model Y change. The expected result was a more consistent black interior, with the roof trim more closely matching the seats and dashboard.

A new 16-inch QHD display

The second change was technical. The Electronic Parts Catalogue listed Display_16_QHD, a component previously associated with Model Y, for the 2026 Model 3 as well. Although the diagonal increase was small, the higher resolution and pixel density could make a noticeable difference to text, graphics and driver-assistance visualisations. The reported aspect ratio changed from 16:10 to 16:9, making the screen a little wider and slightly shorter while increasing its overall area. That could improve the view over the dashboard while providing a sharper display.

Technical comparison

Existing Model 3 display

  • 15.4 inches
  • 1920×1200
  • 16:10 aspect ratio
  • Screen area approximately 106.6 square inches

Proposed 2026 Model 3 display

  • 16 inches
  • 2560×1440
  • 16:9 aspect ratio
  • Screen area approximately 109.4 square inches

Production and global rollout

The discovered assets suggested that several 2026 configurations had already been locked for production. Because the references appeared in the Europe and Asia-Pacific configurator, Gigafactory Shanghai seemed a likely first production site for export vehicles with these changes. Tesla updates had often appeared in China before reaching other factories, but the assets alone did not confirm a rollout schedule.

Could a retrofit be possible?

As with some Model Y changes, the black headlining might fit existing refreshed Model 3 cars if the mounting points and clips remained the same. Compatibility and official part numbers would need checking before planning an aftermarket upgrade. A display retrofit could be more complicated because of the different resolution and possible wiring or control-unit requirements. Neither possibility amounted to a confirmed retrofit programme.

When might the configurator change?

If the code findings proved accurate, an update to Tesla’s European and Asia-Pacific design studios could make the changes official. The article expected that to happen soon after publication, but timing remained unconfirmed. The proposed changes would refine the Highland design rather than transform it, bringing Model 3 closer to Model Y.
