Tesla has presented two developments for its best-selling models in China: a six-seat Model Y called Model YL and a Model 3+ with a revised battery and greater range. At the time of this July 2025 report, the plans concerned the Chinese market. Whether either development would reach Europe remained an open question.

Here is a closer look at the changes described at the time.

A new six-seat Model YL

The Model YL is a long-wheelbase version, increasing the distance between the front and rear axles and providing a six-seat cabin aimed at families wanting more room. Its dimensions place it between the existing Model Y and the Model X.

The main details reported were:

  • A longer wheelbase of 3,040 mm and overall length of 4,976 mm.
  • A six-seat layout with two individual second-row seats and a more spacious, usable third row.
  • Dual Motor AWD, with quoted 0–100 km/h acceleration of 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 217 km/h.
  • A reported 82.5 kWh LFP battery and quoted CLTC range of 688 km. These were the specifications cited in the original report, not a fresh technical verification.
  • A new rear spoiler, different wheels, dedicated Model YL badging and a new light-gold paint finish.

Chinese arrival was expected in autumn 2025. A European launch had not been confirmed at publication, although the format could also appeal to buyers in Western markets.

A new Model 3+ with improved range

Tesla had also applied for Chinese approval of another Model 3 version, referred to as the Model 3+. The report described a single rear motor combined with an LG NMC battery, rather than the battery arrangement of the entry-level rear-wheel-drive version.

The reported changes:

  • A single rear motor, as in the base Model 3 RWD, but with a ternary NMC battery rather than LFP.
  • Range expected to exceed that of the Long Range AWD, helped by the single-motor configuration’s lower energy demand.
  • Early reports suggested it might use the same 78.4 kWh battery as the Long Range, potentially making it a particularly efficient Model 3 variant. This was speculation at publication, rather than a confirmed specification.
  • The estimated price was 270,000 yuan, approximately US$37,600 at the conversion used in the article, placing it between the base RWD and Long Range versions.

A Chinese launch was expected in early September 2025. No export plans for other markets had been announced at publication.

Two approaches to a changing market

Tesla continues to differentiate its range for regional needs. In China, where cabin space and range are important buying considerations, these two variants reflected those priorities.

The question for European readers was straightforward: would they reach our market too? There was no official confirmation at the time. Tesla has sometimes introduced developments in China before expanding availability elsewhere, but that pattern alone does not establish an export plan.
