The launch of Tesla’s Robotaxi service in Austin gave early riders a close look at a system related to, but distinct from, customer FSD (Supervised). Videos shared in June 2025 appeared to show behaviour not yet seen in the public customer builds discussed at the time, including responses to emergency vehicles and complex manoeuvres. Individual clips offered examples to examine, rather than proof of reliability across every situation or a release commitment for all Tesla owners.
Responding to emergency vehicles
One Austin clip described in the original article showed a Robotaxi moving aside for an approaching ambulance. The vehicle signalled and pulled towards the roadside to let it pass. The report attributed the response to visual and audio sensing, although a clip alone cannot establish exactly which inputs or internal decisions produced a manoeuvre.
Responding appropriately involves detecting the emergency vehicle and selecting somewhere suitable to move, while accounting for surrounding traffic. A mistake can have serious consequences. The original report linked the behaviour to improvements Tesla had discussed for FSD V13; the example showed one reported response, not a guarantee that every emergency would be handled correctly.
Automatic camera cleaning
The article also described an automated sequence of wiper movement and washer-fluid spraying intended to improve visibility through the front camera area. Keeping cameras clear is an important operational issue for a camera-based system. The function could help with some contamination, but it should not be described as guaranteeing a clear view in every condition or eliminating the need for inspection and maintenance.
More complex manoeuvres
U-turns and busy car parks were identified as difficult situations for the FSD V13.2.9 customer build being compared. In the Robotaxi clips, the author saw improved behaviour: one showed a U-turn followed by a lane change, while another showed the vehicle navigating a car park to reach a drop-off point. These were observations from selected examples rather than a controlled comparison of overall performance.
The report connected those examples with Tesla’s roadmap for handling garages, driveways and temporary stops to pick up or drop off passengers. Roadmap items and observed fleet behaviour did not establish when, or whether, every function would reach each customer vehicle.
Night driving
Darkness, reflections and bright headlights create difficult conditions for driving software. Early riders described smooth nighttime journeys, including a drop-off shown in the embedded clip. The original article also mentioned operation until midnight. Both the hours and the observations belong to the June 2025 account; a smooth ride does not establish complete reliability after dark or today’s operating hours.
Human support and passenger controls
The report highlighted two controls on the passenger display:
- Call Support: intended to connect a passenger with a human support operator, described in the original report as a video call. Connection time and the exact support interface should not be assumed from that description alone.
- Pull Over: allowed a passenger to request a stop, with the vehicle seeking a suitable place to pull over. The report described confirmation steps to reduce accidental activation. A stop request was not a guarantee of an immediate halt at any location.
What could this mean for Tesla owners?
The original article interpreted Robotaxi behaviour as a preview of future customer FSD releases. The shared development direction was interesting, but a fleet-service demonstration was not a promise that every feature would reach all customer vehicles, hardware generations or markets.
- Responses to emergency vehicles were one area to watch.
- Car-park manoeuvres and passenger drop-offs were another.
- Nighttime driving was also highlighted. Any later customer release would still depend on development, validation, vehicle compatibility and the applicable approvals, rather than the clips alone.
Robotaxi offered a view of Tesla’s development in real traffic. It also made it important to distinguish a restricted fleet service from FSD (Supervised) in an owner’s car, where the driver remained responsible for attentive supervision.
