Halloween in a Tesla can be much more than a theme on the display. With a little card, a basket of treats and a few battery-powered lights, the front boot can become a small display for the evening of 31 October. There is no need to build a film set.

In the United States, this tradition is often called “frunk or treat”: a twist on trick-or-treating, with the frunk taking the place of the front door. We can borrow the idea and adapt it for a courtyard, a gathering of friends or a community event.

1. Halloween in a Tesla: turn the frunk into a mouth

The simplest option is a row of teeth cut from white card, with a dark background inside the compartment. Make a paper template first and check the dimensions with the bonnet open, before attaching anything to the bodywork.

Our advice is to treat it as a temporary display for use only while parked. All decorations must be completely removable before you close the bonnet and drive away. Nothing should interfere with the latch, seals or mechanisms.

2. A basket of treats, without filling the whole space

A removable container makes preparation easier and lets you clear the compartment quickly. Choose an orange basket, add a couple of small paper ghosts and keep the rest simple: a clean arrangement often works better than a pile of objects.

For a family gathering, separate treats by type and keep the original packaging. This practical step helps adults accompanying children check ingredients and preferences, rather than guessing what is in each sweet.

Themed display features can complement the physical decorations. Availability depends on the car and its software.

3. Battery-powered lights to set the mood

A small standalone LED light inside a decorative pumpkin can be enough to give the scene depth. I would choose a warm colour and just a few points of light, avoiding a tangle of wires that makes handing out treats awkward.

We prefer standalone accessories designed for this purpose, rather than improvised electrical connections to the car. Do not use candles or flames inside the vehicle; if the display is outdoors, follow the accessories’ instructions for use.

4. Boombox and Light Show, where available

Tesla’s manual describes Boombox for vehicles equipped with the Pedestrian Warning System: it allows sounds to be played outside while the car is parked. Features may vary by country, configuration and production date.

For Light Show, Tesla recommends checking local rules and not activating it on or near public roads. A party in a suitable area is a different setting from a car parked beside a busy road.

Our suggestion? Do a short test while parked and choose a volume appropriate for the location. A surprise can be fun; disturbing the whole neighbourhood is less so. Check the space around the car before starting any animation.

5. Complete the scene with Halloween Mode

If you have received the feature, you can combine the decorations with the Halloween theme on your car. We have already prepared an in-depth look at the Halloween update for the software changes; this guide focuses on preparing the party.

You do not need every feature to join in. A frunk display and a few photos with friends can be enough to make the evening special. If an option is missing from your car, do not assume there is a fault: check the release notes and your vehicle’s equipment.

A checklist before heading home

  • Remove all decorations and external fixings.
  • Check that the bonnet, boot and doors close freely.
  • Stow objects securely so they cannot move around the cabin.
  • Turn off the party effects before setting off.
