In May 2026, Tesla’s European configurator was reported to be moving away from a one-time FSD purchase towards monthly subscriptions. The article gave 21 May 2026 as the deadline for most markets discussed, including Italy. This records the offer described at publication; the original continent-wide wording should not be taken as confirmation of identical terms in every European country.
The reported end of the upfront option
The Netherlands was reported to have a 15 May deadline, followed by Germany, France, Italy, Belgium and the UK on 21 May. An upfront package was associated with the eligible vehicle and its terms, not an unconditional purchase of autonomous capability “forever”. Removal of a purchase option did not itself establish which functions were approved or available in each market.
The report expected a roughly €99 monthly fee and a possible €49 rate for eligible Enhanced Autopilot owners. These figures required the actual market offer and eligibility conditions; they were not guaranteed continent-wide prices or a promise that subscribing would enable an unapproved function.

The Dutch approval and other markets
The RDW’s April decision was an important step for supervised assistance in the Netherlands. It was more than a general invitation to public testing, but its scope did not automatically extend to other countries. Other national decisions and the EU procedure remained separate; a “domino effect” was an expectation, not a regulatory mechanism guaranteeing acceptance.
The article also reported that Belgium was accelerating its process. That was a report about possible progress, not proof of a Belgian approval on this article’s date.
European software and driver preparation
The European system was not necessarily identical to the US configuration. The article described market-specific interfaces and safeguards, including instructional material and a safety quiz before activation where required. Their exact form depended on the approved version and release.
The purpose was to help drivers understand the system and its limits. Completion of a tutorial did not remove the continuing need to supervise.

Why subscriptions matter to Tesla
Monthly billing offered Tesla a recurring-revenue model instead of relying only on upfront purchases. The article cited an estimate of more than $500 million in annual North American FSD subscription revenue, not a separately verified reported total. It also described Dutch trials following approval; trial availability and eligibility were specific to the offer, not a general promise of free access.
The purchase decision at the time
For owners considering the reported May deadline, the comparison depended on expected use, length of ownership, price and contract terms. A longer period of use might favour an upfront payment in some scenarios, while a cancellable subscription could offer flexibility. Neither was automatically the better choice, and paid access was distinct from regulatory availability.
The report pointed to a stronger subscription emphasis in Tesla’s strategy. Expectations about FSD v15 and further international expansion remained forecasts rather than proof that one commercial model would permanently apply everywhere.
