Tesla has shared figures on adoption of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) package, showing how many owners pay for the advanced driver-assistance feature. The figures appeared in the investor presentation accompanying the fourth-quarter 2025 earnings call.

How many FSD users were there worldwide?

According to the documentation discussed in the article, 1.1 million Tesla vehicles worldwide had active FSD at the end of 2025. The figure included both one-off purchases and monthly subscriptions.

Purchases versus subscriptions

The split showed that one-off purchases still accounted for most paying users, while monthly subscribers were a smaller but growing group. The breakdown reported was:

  • 70% of users had bought the package outright.
  • 30% used a monthly subscription, quoted at around US$99 per month in the market discussed.

Adoption across the Tesla fleet

Against approximately 8.9 million vehicles delivered by the end of 2025, the reported FSD user count represented about 12% of Tesla’s cumulative delivered fleet. The remaining roughly 88% were not included among those paying users, even though many cars were technically compatible. This comparison uses cumulative deliveries, rather than a fresh count of vehicles still in service.

One reason for the relatively low proportion was the lack of full FSD availability in every market, including Europe, owing to regulatory restrictions.

Growth over time

Tesla also presented the growth in FSD users over recent years. The reported total rose steadily, with faster growth in 2024–2025 alongside price reductions in North America. The article cited the 2024 reduction from US$12,000 to US$8,000 as an example; amounts and currencies depend on the market.

  • 2021: 400,000
  • 2022: 500,000
  • 2023: 600,000
  • 2024: 800,000
  • 2025: 1,100,000

Moving away from one-off purchases

Tesla was also phasing out the option to purchase FSD outright. From 14 February 2026, the article reported that the system would be offered only through a monthly subscription in several markets. This reflected a broader strategy intended to:

  • Increase recurring revenue.
  • Make the business more predictable.
  • Allow potential price increases over time.

Tesla FSD

What it means for Tesla and its customers

Within the CEO’s plan discussed in the article, a major long-term target was 10 million active FSD subscriptions, rather than a milestone already achieved. Moving towards subscriptions would increase the role of automotive software services in Tesla’s business and reduce reliance on one-off sales. The relatively modest adoption rate also suggested that many owners either did not yet see enough value to pay regularly or could not access the full feature set in their market. That interpretation should be distinguished from the reported user totals.
