In January 2026, Elon Musk announced a change in how Tesla would sell its most advanced driver-assistance package: from 14 February, the one-time purchase option would end in the markets covered by the change, leaving a subscription. This article discusses that announcement and its possible business implications. The date should not be assumed to have applied identically in Italy or every other market, where product terms and rollout schedules could differ.
Moving away from an upfront purchase
Tesla had sold FSD at several prices. The original article recalled a US price of $15,000 in 2022, later reduced to $8,000, and cited €7,500 for the Italian package. It compared those figures with a $99 monthly US subscription. These were historical prices in different markets, not interchangeable offers or current quotations. The article described subscriptions as increasingly popular, but did not provide a verified breakdown proving how most owners paid.

Business objectives
Recurring subscriptions can make revenue more predictable than occasional upfront sales. The original author connected the change with the 2025 CEO Performance Award’s FSD target, described as ten million active subscriptions. The metric’s formal definition matters: Tesla’s reporting included qualifying upfront purchases as well as monthly subscriptions. Ending upfront sales therefore did not automatically mean that every existing purchase ceased to count or that the award target was guaranteed to be reached.
The hardware question
The article argued that subscriptions could change expectations around future capability. Customers who had bought FSD had paid substantial sums amid promises about later autonomous driving, generating disputes and concerns, particularly around Hardware 3. However, changing the sales model did not by itself resolve legal claims, remove existing contractual obligations or establish that Tesla would never owe an upgrade. A subscriber could assess the features available and cancel according to the terms, but hardware compatibility, prior representations and any retrofit commitments remained separate questions.

The financial comparison
The author considered a subscription more attractive for many customers because it avoided a large initial payment. Whether it actually cost less depended on how long the service was used, future prices, vehicle ownership and the terms applying in that market. Other considerations included:
- The alternative uses of the money otherwise committed to an upfront software purchase.
- The possibility of losing access when a vehicle was written off, and restrictions on moving a purchased package to another car outside an eligible transfer offer.
- Whether an insurance policy and claim valuation recognised the software purchase. That depended on the policy and settlement, rather than a universal rule for all insurers.
Could FSD become more segmented?
The article speculated that a future genuinely unsupervised service could have a different economic value from supervised assistance. Its suggestion of value reaching tens of thousands of euros a year was a hypothetical scenario, not a verified benefit, income forecast or available product. A subscription structure could potentially support:
- Different service tiers.
- A clearer separation between advanced assistance packages and FSD (Supervised).
- A possible future unsupervised product, subject to technical and regulatory progress.
- Commercial licences for a robotaxi or ride-hailing service, if actually offered and permitted.

A longer-term strategy
A subscription model could give Tesla more flexibility as software evolved, with future prices and terms governed by the applicable agreement and law. The author saw the announcement as part of a move towards ongoing software services. That interpretation did not establish an imminent autonomous-driving breakthrough: FSD (Supervised) remained a driver-assistance system requiring active supervision, and later unsupervised services were a separate ambition.
