Nearly a decade after its first unveiling, the next-generation Tesla Roadster was heading back into the spotlight. This September 2026 preview reported an event scheduled for 1 October 2026 in Texas, accompanied by a teaser and countdown on Tesla’s website. Early communications to reservation holders pointed towards something more unusual than a static presentation, with a demonstration intended to show the car’s more ambitious technology.

Could the Roadster really lift off the ground?
The most striking element was the proposed SpaceX cold-gas thruster package, which Elon Musk had discussed several times. According to the information described ahead of the event, the demonstration car was expected to be remotely controlled and attempt a brief hover above the ground. At publication, this remained a preview of the planned demonstration.
That would not be the normal road-going configuration. The demonstration vehicle was described as an extreme version built to showcase the SpaceX technology, rather than a car approved for everyday road use. That distinction helped explain the anticipation: the reveal could become a technology showcase quite unlike a conventional vehicle launch.

Hypercar ambitions
The Roadster’s performance targets were already ambitious. Musk had previously discussed 0–60 mph in under two seconds, with a possible SpaceX package taking that below one second, according to his own claims. The original 2017 presentation had advertised around 620 miles of range, a top speed above 250 mph and a starting price of $200,000. These were announced targets and prices, rather than independent production-car test results.
The planned demonstration was therefore primarily a showcase. Cold-gas thrusters remained one of the project’s most debated ideas, potentially taking the Roadster beyond the familiar formula for an electric sports car. How much of that technology would be practical outside demonstrations was still an open question.

A long-awaited next step
A great deal of time had passed since the first unveiling. Production had originally been expected in 2020, but the project was delayed repeatedly. Tesla continued discussing the car while reservation holders waited for a final version.
At publication, invitations were reportedly being sent to early reservation holders and the official countdown was running towards 1 October 2026. The event was expected to provide a clearer view of how the Roadster project had evolved since its first promises nearly a decade earlier.
