Tesla was already developing its next generation of AI processors before AI5 entered production. Elon Musk said engineers were working on AI6, a platform intended to support future driving systems, Optimus and Tesla’s computing infrastructure. His comments on X outlined ambitions for the project rather than measured production-chip results.

According to Musk, AI6 could set a record for useful intelligence obtained from a silicon wafer, taking manufacturing yields into account. That was his stated objective, not an independently verified efficiency record.

Why the chip matters

Discussions of FSD, Robotaxi and Optimus often focus on software, but hardware is equally important. Greater processing capability can let AI models analyse more data, respond faster and handle more complex workloads, provided the software and system design make effective use of it.

The article described a possible role for AI6 beyond passenger cars, across an ecosystem that could include:

  • Tesla vehicles using FSD;
  • the Robotaxi fleet;
  • Optimus humanoid robots;
  • computing systems supporting neural-network development;
  • potential future space-related applications.

Ambitions beyond the existing hardware

At publication, AI4 was Tesla’s main recent in-vehicle computing platform. The article cited expectations that AI5 could deliver around five times its computing performance, while Musk suggested AI6 might double AI5’s performance through architectural and memory changes. These were forward-looking comparisons, with results dependent on workload and implementation.

Memory capacity had become an important constraint as FSD models grew more complex. The report discussed plans for more on-chip memory and faster access to data to reduce that limitation.

Memory and computing changes

The technical directions discussed in the report included:

  • greater use of very fast SRAM;
  • LPDDR6 memory;
  • dedicated AI accelerators;
  • architectures tailored to Tesla’s neural networks.

The goal was to reduce bottlenecks in running AI models. In practical terms, a processor benefits when it can keep working instead of repeatedly waiting for data to arrive from main memory.

Samsung manufacturing plans

Musk identified Samsung as a manufacturing partner for AI6, with production planned at its new semiconductor facility in Texas. The article also referred to work involving Intel and SpaceX as part of a broader effort to integrate chip design and manufacturing. The scope and status of those separate projects require their own confirmation; they should not be treated as interchangeable with the AI6 manufacturing agreement.

When could it reach customer cars?

The report said next-generation chips could first be used in Optimus and Tesla’s computing infrastructure, with customer vehicles following later. It attributed that expected sequence to Musk rather than presenting a confirmed vehicle rollout.

The timelines discussed were potential AI5 production in 2027 and AI6 in 2028. Those were targets, not guaranteed dates, and did not establish an immediate change for existing owners. They illustrated the hardware roadmap Tesla intended to use for future FSD and its wider AI strategy.

If the targets were achieved, future Tesla systems would depend not only on battery and motor efficiency but also on the chips processing information in real time. More computing power alone would not establish autonomous-driving capability or regulatory approval.
