Images of recently built Tesla Model Y cars showed an interesting change to the front camera assembly. Unlike the previous design, which was open underneath and allowed air to circulate from the cabin, the new housing appeared fully sealed. Its design closely resembled that seen on Cybercab prototypes, suggesting Tesla might be standardising its sensor architecture as it developed unsupervised FSD and future robotaxis. That resemblance alone did not confirm the purpose of the redesign.
Haze and glare: a familiar issue
Owners had reported a phenomenon known as off-gassing, which can resemble fogging. Some plastics in the dashboard and camera housing release vapours over time. These can accumulate in the area in front of the cameras and condense on the inside of the windscreen, leaving an oily, hazy film. In direct sunlight, that film can create strong glare that affects the visibility needed by Autopilot and FSD.

The measures used so far
During the preceding year, Tesla had introduced several measures, according to the report:
- a DIY procedure for cleaning the front camera glass
- a professional precision-cleaning service
- in-car notifications prompting owners to book service or clean the camera area
The procedure was described as relatively straightforward, though Tesla had sometimes offered a one-off free cleaning. Subsequent work was reported to cost around $60 or €60 and to be performed as needed. Those figures described experiences at the time, rather than a universal service entitlement or current quotation.
Could improved sealing solve the problem?
The new sealed housing appeared designed to tackle the cause. Separating the cameras from cabin air could isolate the glass from vapours released by interior materials, reducing the formation of a film. Similar designs on Cybercab and newer Model Y cars suggested a further development of Tesla’s hardware aimed at reducing maintenance and corrective work, though long-term results remained to be established.

Following up on an earlier commitment
The change was consistent with Musk’s remarks the previous September. He had publicly acknowledged the difficulty of keeping front camera glass clean and the delicate nature of DIY access, saying making this easier was a priority for the engineering team. It remained unclear whether the new housing would reach the whole range or whether an official or owner-installed retrofit would become available for existing Model Y cars.
