On Friday 24 January 2025, the Teslhub team attended an exclusive event at the Tesla Center in Vittuone, Italy. Alongside the new 2025 Model Y, known as Juniper, the centre displayed Cybercab, Tesla’s purpose-built robotaxi. The visit gave the original reporting team an opportunity to examine both vehicles closely and take the photographs accompanying this article. This was a vehicle presentation, not the launch of an autonomous taxi service in Italy.

Cybercab: a different approach to urban travel

Imagine a car without a steering wheel, pedals or a driver. Cybercab embodied Tesla’s ambition to build a vehicle specifically for autonomous taxi journeys. The display vehicle made that design tangible, but its appearance at Vittuone did not establish that unsupervised driving was approved or available to customers. The project’s intended use should be distinguished from the supervised driver-assistance systems offered in other Tesla vehicles.

Design and features

Cybercab combines futuristic styling with a minimalist approach. Some of its lines recall Cybertruck, adapted to a smaller vehicle intended for urban journeys. Simplicity, accessibility and practical operation were central to the proposal. The features discussed during the presentation included:

  • No steering wheel or pedals: the design envisaged operation without a driver, using Tesla’s autonomous-driving technology. Removing the conventional driving controls allowed the cabin to focus on passengers. This described the project’s intended operation, rather than a road-use approval in Italy.
  • A 21-inch display: a large central touchscreen was intended to provide access to destinations, route information, films and music during a journey.
  • Automated cleaning: Tesla’s proposed taxi-service concept included cleaning equipment between trips. It was a planned fleet-support system, not evidence that an operational cleaning network already existed at the Italian display.
  • Wireless charging: the design used induction charging over a dedicated pad, avoiding the need for a person to connect a cable.

The original report identified the displayed car’s plate as number 10 among the 19 vehicles presented at Elon Musk’s unveiling event in the Los Angeles area.

A cabin designed around passengers

The cabin is simple but welcoming. Its two seats resemble lounge chairs more than conventional heavily bolstered car seats, reflecting Tesla’s aim to create a place to relax, work or watch a film during a journey.

The layout prioritises the passenger experience:

  • Wide, spacious seats without pronounced side bolsters, intended for urban trips.
  • A large luggage compartment with room for bags or suitcases.
  • A minimalist dashboard, with the central display providing the main interface.
  • Butterfly-style doors, adding a distinctive visual feature and an unusual way to enter the cabin.

Technical features discussed at the presentation

Cybercab was presented as a simple, efficient vehicle built around automated operation. The main design features and expectations described in the original report were:

  • Unsupervised operation as the design objective: the vehicle was intended to use Tesla’s autonomous-driving system without a human driver. This was an intended capability, not proof of regulatory approval or customer availability.
  • Two seats: capacity for a maximum of two passengers, with urban journeys a principal use case.
  • Wireless charging: the displayed design did not have a conventional charging port and was intended to rely on induction charging.
  • Continuous LED lighting at the front and rear, with styling that recalled Cybertruck.
  • Larger rear wheels: the original report estimated 21 or 22 inches. That was an estimate, not a confirmed production specification or verified explanation of handling performance.
  • Automated cleaning equipment as part of the proposed service infrastructure, rather than a guarantee that every vehicle would always be ready to use.

Price and accessibility

At the time, the discussion centred on a price target around $30,000. The original article suggested a possible European figure of €30,000–€35,000, but that was speculation rather than an announced European price. It also described production being targeted by 2027. These were January 2025 expectations, subject to development, manufacturing and regulatory progress, not a current offer or a confirmed Italian launch date.

Cybercab and Model Y Juniper at Vittuone

The original article invited readers to the Tesla Center’s opening on 1 February 2025 and the following display days through 5 February. Those dates refer to the historical event and are not a current invitation.

For the reporting team, Cybercab offered a striking look at Tesla’s proposed direction for urban mobility. Its design and planned operating model raised questions extending beyond the car itself, including charging, cleaning and the approvals needed for a driverless service. The original photographs record the vehicle shown at Vittuone, alongside the updated Model Y.
