This August report attributed to Tesla’s Q2 2026 results call an acknowledgement that the installed HW3 configuration would not support the intended unsupervised FSD system. It also described proposals for customers who had previously bought FSD. The distinction between a discussed plan and a bookable, contractually defined customer programme remained important.
The proposed FSD v14 Lite
The article said HW3 vehicles would continue receiving software development and discussed a future v14 Lite intended to bring some newer behaviour to the older platform. It gave no confirmed release date or complete feature list. Computing and camera limitations were described as obstacles to the intended unsupervised system; newer supervised software would not itself remove those limits or the need for an attentive driver.

A more extensive hardware conversion
The proposed remedy for qualifying FSD purchasers was described as more involved than the earlier HW2.5-to-HW3 computer replacement. The report listed:
- New higher-resolution cameras comparable to newer-generation equipment.
- A newer onboard computer.
- Replacement of some internal wiring to accommodate greater data throughput.
The article also discussed an AI4+ platform with more computing capacity and twice the memory, with production projected no earlier than mid-2027. Its use in future HW3 conversions was explicitly unconfirmed. The final retrofit design and delivery schedule could not be established from that possibility.
Dedicated upgrade facilities
The report described dedicated hubs as a way to carry out substantial disassembly, component replacement and wiring work without overwhelming ordinary service centres. That was a proposed operating model, not confirmation that facilities were available for customer appointments.
A possible incentive for a newer car
An alternative discussed was a trade-in incentive towards a newer AI4-equipped Tesla. The article acknowledged that no amount had been announced and cited early $4,000–6,000 estimates. Those were speculative figures, not an advertised benefit, guaranteed vehicle valuation or European offer.

Other HW3 owners and subscribers
The article expected initial priority for customers who had purchased FSD and considered a later paid route for other owners, including monthly subscribers. Both wider eligibility and the suggested $3,000–5,000 cost remained possibilities. They were not terms on which an owner could already rely.
The connection with future Robotaxi ambitions
A successful, approved upgrade could potentially expand the number of vehicles suitable for future autonomous applications. That was a strategic possibility, not confirmation that existing private cars would qualify for a Robotaxi network or generate revenue for their owners. Hardware, software, safety validation, insurance, operating terms and market permissions would all matter.
The reported proposals sought to address the gap between earlier FSD expectations and HW3’s limitations. The next useful milestone for owners was a detailed, deliverable programme with confirmed eligibility and terms, rather than treating projected hardware or estimated prices as a completed solution.
