Tesla had long presented its hardware roadmap as a route towards future unsupervised driving. After the Q1 2026 results call, this April report described an important limitation: existing HW3 vehicles would need different hardware to support the intended unsupervised system. That should not be simplified into a claim that every car built since 2019 had identical hardware or an unconditional guarantee of Level 4 capability.

The reported HW3 limitation

The article attributed to Tesla an acknowledgement that the installed HW3 configuration would not support unsupervised FSD. It also discussed continued supervised-software development, including a proposed “v14 Lite”. Those development plans were not a release date, a promise that every newer function would be backported or proof of an autonomous product already available. Calling the acknowledgement the first ever also required comparison with earlier Tesla statements.

Two technical issues were highlighted in the report:

  • Computing capacity for the intended future system.
  • Camera image quality and the requirements of the newer approach.

A retrofit beyond replacing the computer

The article described a proposed response for customers who had paid for FSD: a broader hardware conversion rather than a simple computer replacement. Its exact scope, eligibility and implementation still required official customer terms.

The reported conversion could involve:

  • New cameras with capabilities comparable to the newer AI4 generation.
  • A replacement onboard computer.
  • Changes to internal wiring to support the new components.

An AI4 chip is shown for illustration; the original caption’s “twice the size” comparison was not a complete specification of either computer or a confirmed retrofit package.

The report connected these changes with higher data-bandwidth requirements. It also discussed a possible AI4+ computer, doubled memory and production no earlier than mid-2027. The suggestion that this platform would be used for HW3 retrofits was an inference, not an announced final parts list or guaranteed schedule.

Possible dedicated upgrade centres

Because a substantial conversion could require partial disassembly and wiring work, the article described plans for dedicated hubs in major urban areas rather than relying only on ordinary service capacity. It did not establish that centres were open or that owners could book an upgrade.

A possible trade-in alternative

The report also discussed a potential incentive to move to a newer AI4-equipped car instead of modifying the existing vehicle. It cited estimates of $4,000–6,000, while acknowledging that details were not official. Those estimates were not an available discount and could not be converted into an equivalent euro offer for Europe.

Could other owners pay for an upgrade?

Initial priority was described as customers who had bought the FSD package. A later paid option for other HW3 owners, including subscribers, was discussed as a possibility. The suggested $3,000–5,000 cost was an estimate, not a published price or an entitlement.

What owners still needed to know

The reported hardware limitation mattered because it differed from earlier expectations of future capability on the installed platform. A proposed remedy could offer a path forward, but its practical value depended on the final engineering, eligibility, timing, market permissions and customer terms.

Owners therefore still needed a concrete offer before choosing between a retrofit and replacing a car. Neither option could be assumed to deliver an approved unsupervised service simply because it involved newer hardware.
