Tesla’s flush and electronically operated door handles were facing closer safety scrutiny in early 2026. Chinese proposals and a US defect petition raised a shared question: could an occupant or rescuer find and operate a mechanical release when electrical power failed? Neither a draft nor an investigation by itself established a worldwide requirement to redesign every Tesla.

The Chinese proposal

The original article referred to a MIIT draft titled Safety Technical Requirements for Car Door Handles and gave 16 December 2025 as a publication date. A consultation on this subject had also been published in September 2025; the exact December revision and its status require checking. The proposals discussed mechanical release, including operation without electrical power, and clearer access for occupants and rescuers. They should be distinguished from a final standard already in force.

Why accessibility matters

People unfamiliar with Model 3 and Model Y may not immediately understand their exterior handles. In an emergency, unfamiliar controls and difficult-to-find releases can become more serious obstacles. Interior mechanical-release locations also differ by model, year and seat position: some rear releases are behind covers or trim, while Model X’s manual Falcon Wing Door procedure has its own steps. Owners should consult the correct manual rather than assume all cars have the same release.

The US defect petition

NHTSA’s DP25002 evaluated a petition received on 24 November 2025 concerning the mechanical door release on model-year 2022 Model 3. The original article discussed reports of difficulty escaping after low-voltage power loss, but the petition should not be presented as a finding covering every Tesla electronic door system or proof of a defect already determined. US scrutiny and Chinese standards work were separate processes.

One handle for two functions?

The article reported that design chief Franz von Holzhausen was exploring a clearer combination of electronic and mechanical opening. It imagined a single handle whose initial movement activated the electronic release and further travel operated mechanically. Similar approaches exist elsewhere, but this description did not establish a final Tesla design, affected models or a delivery date.

Exterior access

The proposals also concerned access from outside the vehicle. A flush appearance does not establish how a latch behaves without power. On Model S, a retracted presenting handle can create an additional access problem; on Model 3 and Model Y, moving the exterior handle should not be assumed to guarantee that an unpowered latch opens. The applicable design and emergency procedure need to be checked.

Could one design be used worldwide?

The article expected changes around the end of 2027, but that was a projected regulatory timetable requiring the final standard and transition provisions. It also predicted Tesla might adopt one global handle design to simplify production. That was a commercial and engineering inference, not an announced worldwide programme. The broader issue was how to combine clean styling with an emergency action people can find and understand quickly.
