A reduced version of FSD v14 appeared to be Tesla’s route forward for older vehicles. During its third-quarter 2025 earnings presentation, Tesla said it intended to continue developing compatible FSD software for Hardware 3 (HW3) cars. The update mattered to owners whose vehicles could not run the full software intended for newer hardware.
FSD v14 Lite was planned for 2026
Tesla described a version called FSD v14 Lite, planned for the second quarter of 2026. Its aim was to bring some FSD v14 features to HW3 vehicles, adapting the software to the limits of the earlier hardware. This was a development target at publication, rather than confirmation that the update had reached customers.
At the time, HW3 cars were running FSD v12.6, an intermediate release incorporating some v13 features. HW4 cars had moved to FSD v14, with v14.2 and v14.3 expected to follow. Versions and availability described here relate to that period and the markets covered by the announcement.
Tesla’s plans for Hardware 3
During the call, Tesla’s VP of AI, Ashok Elluswamy, reiterated that the company did not intend to abandon HW3 vehicles, while acknowledging the technical challenge of supporting them. Tesla had also discussed a possible future hardware upgrade, after first solving the wider autonomy problem. The intention was to understand the computing requirements of the eventual system before committing to a costly upgrade that might need to be repeated.

What was expected from FSD v14 Lite?
The Lite version was not expected to reproduce every capability of the full v14 system. The article discussed several possible improvements, including:
- Better handling of roadworks, emergency vehicles and security gates.
- Adjustable speed profiles and automatic parking at the destination.
- An updated user interface for changing driving profiles on the touchscreen.
These were expectations, rather than a final release-note list. The software would also lack benefits associated with v14’s uncompressed video processing and larger AI models, which require more processing power and memory than HW3 provides.
The limitations of Hardware 3
The article identified memory, as well as processing power, as a constraint. It described HW4 as having twice the memory and cited an expectation of up to 144 GB of RAM for the future AI5, then anticipated towards the end of 2026. Those AI5 figures and dates were forward-looking reports. Tesla’s aim for HW3 was a smoother and more capable version than v12.6, rather than full feature parity with newer hardware.
How firm was the timetable?
The article placed the expected v14 Lite window between March and June 2026, while expressing the author’s view that delivery might slip into summer 2026. Its assessment that a hardware retrofit was unlikely in the same year was also interpretation, not a firm Tesla commitment. The software target did not establish the specification, cost or date of a future upgrade.
For HW3 owners, FSD v14 Lite was presented as a transitional step: an effort to extend existing cars’ software capabilities while Tesla developed newer hardware. FSD discussed in this context still requires driver supervision; development plans do not establish unsupervised capability.
