We have discussed Model 3 customers’ concerns several times on Teslhub, from the absence of a turn signal stalk, replaced by touch controls on the steering wheel, to the lack of a front bumper camera. The latter had been widely anticipated but ultimately arrived only with the new Model Y. This September 2025 report describes interesting developments.

According to a recent type-approval document filed with the European Union, Model 3 was due to receive a small but significant update introducing those two much-requested features: a front bumper camera and the return of a turn signal stalk.

A front bumper camera

The document indicated a camera positioned in the front bumper, an addition users had requested since the switch from ultrasonic sensors to Tesla Vision.
Although Vision reconstructs the surroundings in three dimensions, the windscreen camera cannot cover the area immediately ahead of the bumper, complicating low-speed manoeuvres and tight parking. The new camera was expected to improve drivers’ close-range visibility and help FSD estimate distances to low or less visible obstacles.

The return of the turn signal stalk

The other major development was the return of the turn signal stalk. Following criticism of replacing stalks with steering wheel buttons, Tesla was bringing back the physical control, following the approach adopted for the new Model Y.
The change would be accompanied by a redesigned steering wheel without haptic turn signal buttons. The simple up/down stalk would have no other functions: wipers and high beams would remain on the steering wheel, while gear selection would continue through the centre display.

Retrofit and availability

The question many readers were asking was: would a retrofit be possible? In China, Tesla had already begun offering a kit to restore the turn signal stalk for around $350 on Model 3 cars produced after February 2025, with plans to support earlier cars. It remained unclear whether the same option would reach Europe or include the new front camera.

Tesla listens to its customers

The update was “minor” only on paper. It addressed two widespread community criticisms and brought Model 3 into line with the direction taken by Model Y.
It also sent a clear message: Tesla was listening to its customers and moving towards more practical everyday solutions. This was one of the company’s key values and had contributed to customer loyalty.
