Following reports of a turn signal stalk returning to the new Model 3 in China, Tesla announced a retrofit for existing owners. It was not identical to the traditional stalk used before 2023, but a simplified version dedicated to the indicators, without functions such as high beams or windscreen wipers.
In effect, Tesla was taking a partial step back, offering a compromise between its stalkless design and the usability owners wanted.
A return to practicality
Removing steering-column stalks, beginning with Model S and Model X in 2021, was part of a push towards greater automation. The article argued that while this approach could work for wipers and gear selection, steering-wheel indicator buttons were less practical, particularly on roundabouts. We had discussed the issue in this article, especially in relation to the popular Model 3.
The retrofit addressed a specific community request, suggesting Tesla had recognised that, for some functions, a simple physical control remained hard to beat.

Price and installation
At publication, the retrofit cost 2,499 yuan, approximately $350, including parts and installation at a Tesla Service Centre. It was available only in China at that point. The report stated that other markets, including Europe, were expected to follow, but no official local timing or pricing had been provided.
Compatible vehicles
The initial modification was limited to Model 3 cars delivered after 7 February 2025, possibly because their wiring was already compatible. Tesla had also indicated that a version for older Model 3 cars would follow, without giving pricing or availability details.
Model S, Model X and Cybertruck were not included, while Model Y retained a turn signal stalk. The article viewed this as recognition that Model 3 and Model Y needed to appeal to a wide audience, including drivers who valued a familiar, intuitive physical control.
Prospects for Europe
Alongside the stalk’s return, Model 3 in China was also receiving a front bumper camera. This suggested that a smaller European refresh might follow, potentially bringing both the stalk and additional camera. At publication, that remained a possibility rather than a confirmed European specification.
