The refreshed Tesla Model Y, known by its Juniper codename, was spotted again, this time in Europe. Images taken in Spain offered a closer look at possible changes to Tesla’s best-selling SUV. This archive article covers the sightings and rumours circulating before the official unveiling.

Reports point towards an imminent unveiling

Reports at the time suggested an unveiling before the end of the month and said volume production had begun at Tesla’s Shanghai factory. Chinese media suggested deliveries could start in February 2025, after the Lunar New Year on 29 January. The speculation coincided with limited stocks of the outgoing Model Y in several markets. These were pre-launch reports, rather than a confirmed global delivery schedule.

Exterior design: what appeared to be changing?

The spy images suggested several differences between the refreshed Model Y and its predecessor:

Front:
The bumper appeared substantially revised. A possible front-bumper camera, already familiar from Cybertruck, attracted attention. The article suggested it could support parking and driver-assistance functions, although its capabilities and resistance to dirt were not confirmed by the photographs. The covered headlights also prompted speculation about a connecting light bar that would distinguish the car from Model 3.

Side:
The familiar overall profile remained, but the doors appeared revised along the lines of the refreshed Model 3. Small changes to the mirrors were also suggested by the images.

Rear:

The images suggested a new rear light bar and a camera positioned at the edge of the tailgate rather than underneath it. The article interpreted this as a change that might improve the camera’s view and reduce exposure to dirt. A rear-camera washer was not evident in the photographs, leaving another detail uncertain before launch.

Cabin changes: comfort and a cleaner design

The cabin was expected to combine Tesla’s minimalist approach with additional comfort features. The following items were circulating as pre-launch expectations:

  • A stalkless steering wheel: the article speculated that touch controls might replace the indicator and wiper stalks, following Model 3. This was an unconfirmed prediction, not a verified feature of the eventual Model Y.
  • Ventilated front seats: a possible comfort improvement for longer journeys.
  • Multicolour ambient lighting: another expected cabin addition.
  • A rear touchscreen: additional controls and entertainment for rear passengers.
  • Slimmer centre-screen bezels: a possible change to the dashboard’s appearance.

The seats looked similar in the available images, although the article considered whether Tesla might introduce the revised design seen in Model 3. Much of the dashboard remained covered, so the cabin’s final specification was still uncertain.

What Juniper could mean for Model Y

The sightings pointed towards a substantial Model Y refresh, with possible lighting, camera and cabin changes. They offered an early indication of Tesla’s direction, but photographs of covered prototypes could not confirm every detail. The expectations in this article should be read in that pre-launch context.
